OTTOVILLE – Eugene “Gene” Byrne, 89, of Ottoville, passed away surrounded by his family at 7:44 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, at his residence. He was born Feb. 20, 1936, in Cloverdale to Orion and Edwina (Miller) Byrne, who preceded him in death. On Jan. 15, 1955, he married Clarice Rayle, they were married for 70 years. She survives in Ottoville.
Gene is also survived by four children, Dennis (Dianne) Byrne of Van Wert, Laurie (Paul) Boecker and Kent (Mish Workman) Byrne and Beth (Jason Machunas) Kroeger of Ottoville; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law: Carol Byrne of Ottoville.
He is also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lyndsey Byrne; two brothers, Robert (Jean) Byrne, and Hubert Byrne; and a sister, Rita Byrne-Lewandowski.
Gene was a retired publishing editor from the Van Wert Times Bulletin and the Delphos Herald. He also worked at the Ottoville Hardware doing repairs of all kinds. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and Ottoville VFW Auxiliary. Gene loved fishing, reading, spending time with his kids and grandkids, and being their taxi driver. He also enjoyed puzzles and playing cards. Gene had coached Little League baseball.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 3, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, with the Very Reverend George Mahas officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. with a scripture service at 1:45 p.m.; and again on Monday from 9-10 a.m. at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township.
