On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the world lost a true angel. Dorothy M. Miller, age 93, passed away at VanCrest of Delphos in her beloved hometown, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. A devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, wife, and cherished friend. Dorothy’s life was a testament to kindness, faith, and the power of love. A proud lifelong resident of Delphos, Ohio, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth and devotion that will forever live in the hearts of all who knew her.
Dorothy was born on January 5, 1932, in Delphos to the late Donald and Lorene (Stirn) Buettner. On June 28, 1951, she married Wayne Metzger, her first love, who preceded her in death on August 14, 1971. On October 23, 1973, Dorothy married Gene R. Miller, a kind hearted soldier and devoted husband, who helped her continue raising her beautiful family. Together, Dorothy and Gene shared over three decades of marriage until his passing on October 23, 2001.
Dorothy’s greatest joy was her family. She was the proud mother of six sons and three daughters and poured her heart into creating a home filled with love, faith, and warmth. Family gatherings were the cornerstone of her life, and summers spent at Sandy Point Lake were a cherished tradition where her children and grandchildren created lasting memories.
Dorothy was a dedicated member of Delphos St. John’s Catholic Church. She participated in the church’s community and relied on her faith as a source of strength throughout her life. Dorothy also found happiness in her many hobbies, especially crocheting blankets for her family, which became treasured keepsakes. She enjoyed the simple joys of life, such as crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and time spent with loved ones.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Lorene Buettner, her first husband, Wayne Metzger, her second husband, Gene Miller, brothers, Donald (Anne) Buettner, Tom Buettner, George (Dolores) Buettner, Gene Buettner and Richard Buettner; a step-son, Timothy Miller, son-in-law, Larry Betz; brother-in-law, Robert Halliwill; her father-in-law, Vernon Metzger; mother-in-law, Hazel McDonald; sister-in-law, Rosemary Feison; brother-in-law, Victor Feison, and two grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, Daniel Metzger of Delphos, Donald (Libby) Metzger of Fort Jennings, David (Janet) Metzger of Fort Jennings, Dennis (Barb) Metzger of Fort Jennings, Douglas (Brenda) Metzger of Delphos, and Dale Metzger of Delphos; daughters, Kathi (Stan) Gasser of Fort Jennings, Laura Betz of Delphos, and Sue (Lonnie) Lundy of Delphos; sisters, Lois Halliwill of California and Edna (John) Feathers of Wyoming, sisters-in-law, Irma Buettner, Amy Buettner and Carol Buettner; as well as 32 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Dorothy spent most of her working life as a bank teller at Peoples National Bank and later at Advantage Cleaners, where she remained a dedicated employee until the remarkable age of 85. Known for her outgoing, spitfire personality and being the life of the party, Dorothy brought joy and energy to every room she entered. Her quick wit, sense of humor, and warm spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her true passion was her family, faith, and serving others with love and compassion.
Though she will be deeply missed, Dorothy’s family finds comfort in knowing she is reunited in heaven with her loved ones. Her legacy of faith, love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St John’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at Weber Funeral Home 1840 E. Fifth St. Delphos, Ohio; a Parish Wake service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:45 p.m. also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s School Teacher Endowment Fund.
