DELPHOS — William “Bill” Smith, 74, of Delphos passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center.
He was born Aug.t 14, 1950, in Defiance to Leroy and Marie (Hughes) Smith, who preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Sharon Martin on Dec. 8, 1971. She survives in Delphos.
Bill is also survived by his daughter, Amanda (Chad) Kyler; grandchildren, Kobe, Kaden, Kayla, Kylee and Kailyn Smith, Emma, Beau, Mason and Lane Kyler; and brothers, Donald and Robert Smith.
Bill was also preceded in death by his daughter, Michele “Shelly” Smith; and a son, William “Billy” Smith.
Bill was a veteran of the Army, where he served overseas for many months in Korea and Germany. After serving his country, he worked for over 30 years as an Operating Engineer for Harper Structures and Miller Brothers Construction and ran the large cranes that built bridges all across Ohio. He was known as the very best at what he did and took a lot of pride in his work. After retiring from there, he decided he wasn’t quite ready to stop working and worked for five more years at Unverferth Manufacturing. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back and was always helping others. He loved fixing cars and lawnmowers. He could fix pretty much anything on a car and enjoyed working in his garage every day after he retired. He was a jokester and would lovingly refer to his wife as “the warden.” His grandkids loved his jokes and will always remember grandpa asking them if they wanted a “knuckle sandwich.” He also loved dogs and had a very special one named Sadie who will miss him dearly. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, at Harter & Schier Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
