Delphos mayor thanks local voters PDF Print

To the citizens of Delphos

I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported the ¼% income tax issue on May 6. The monies raised will be used to support our parks, and in turn, will free up monies for other essential services for our city.

The passing of the income tax and the good news we received on the Lakeview Farms expansion means the city finances will improve but it will take some time to get us back to where we need to be.

I want to personally thank the Delphos police officer that happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Recently, my granddaughter, Anna Fitch, and two of her girlfriends were taking a bike ride along Pierce Street here in Delphos. As they were riding, they came upon a baby owl lying on the sidewalk. They went over to the owl and it opened its eyes and appeared to be hurt. They didn’t know what to do. About that time, a Delphos police officer drove by and the girls flagged the officer down. He stopped his car and got out to see what was wrong. The girls explained the owl looked hurt and the officer told them it looks like the owl has a broken wing. He went over to his car, got a box out and picked up the owl, very carefully, and placed the owl in the box. He took the box, with the owl and put it in the police car. He assured the girls he would take care of the owl and drove away.

The annual Relay for Life Trivia Challenge saw a record number of teams participating this year. Congratulations to the three top finishing teams, who all generously donated their prize winnings back to the Relay For Life.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to them as well as to all of the supporters of this great annual event, and extend an invitation to those who’ve not participated in the past, to get a team together and come out next year and play.

I’d like to thank the city administration for holding an open forum on Wednesday night. I appreciate the city administration, council members, department heads, city employees, and citizens who attended and provided information. All contributed their time and talents. I feel exchanges of this sort are never easy, but always important. We all benefit when there is more communication and dialogue on any issue, because talking to each other about important issues leads to a real chance for learning and understanding.

Voting day in May will be coming soon. As you know, the Delphos Council is trying to balance the budget after losing some of the big taxes from closed businesses.

We are urging you to vote for the .25-percent tax increase so Delphos can keep the swimming pool open and for the parks’ upkeep.

All children should learn to swim. It could be a matter of life or death some day. Our Delphos pool is a unique round pool. We have good lifeguards and the water is kept clean. There is also a nice concession stand for people who want to have a snack. People also bring coolers.
