BATH TOWNSHIP — Bath built a 5-1 lead in its District 6 ACME summer baseball tournament contest with archrival Elida Monday evening.
The Wildcats then held off a 7th-inning uprising to secure a 5-3 victory at Bath High School.
Bath (12-5) collected 11 hits versus two Bulldog hurlers: lefty starter Austin Morrison (3 2/3 innings pitched, 9 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned, 1 base-on-balls, 2 strikeouts; 78 pitches, 55 for strikes) and reliever Garrett Brinkman (2 1/3 IPs, 2 hits, 2 BBs, 1 K; 37 pitches, 19 for strikes).
“Austin battled today. He is an even-keeled pitcher and you know what you’re going to get,” Elida ACME coach Zack Miller said. “What you saw today offensively was the story of our summer: we couldn’t get the big 2-out hit until it was late. It seems every time we got something going, it was with two outs.”
Tyler Stahr (2 runs scored), Cam Jenkins (2 runs batted in), Cam Clark and Andrew Renner each garnered two hits for the hosts.
“Jared has been a really solid pitcher for us this summer,” Bath coach Johnny Simindinger explained. “We came off a big offensive day Sunday and we carried that confidence over to today.”
Bath starter Jared Davis got the win (5 2/3 IPs, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 4 BBs, 5 Ks; 91 pitches, 48 strikes) and Jacob Horstman mopped up (1 1/3 IPs, 2 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 BB; 23 pitches, 14 strikes).
Leadoff man Adam Purdy had the best day at the plate for the Orange and Black, going 1-for-2 (double) and added two free passes.
Bath retaliated in the home half on Stahr’s leadoff hit to left, a stolen base, a 2-out wild pitch and an error on the sequence.
Elida took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a leadoff walk to Purdy, a wild pitch, a sacrifice bunt by Owen Anderson and a single to left by Travis Watkins.
The Wildcats left runners on second and third with two down in the home second.
The Bulldogs got back-to-back free passes to Purdy and Anderson with two down in the third.
The hosts went up 2-1 in the home third on a 1-out Davis free pass and a run-scoring double to left center by Jenkins; he was caught too far off second on the play. Bath ended up leaving runners on first and second.
Derick Snyder earned a 1-out base-on-balls in the visiting fourth and a 2-out balk advanced him up.
Bath scored its final tallies in the fourth, all with two outs. Luke Niebel singled to center, stole second and scored on Stahr’s bloop to center. In turn, he scored via a Davis rocket double to left, finishing Morrison. Jenkins greeted Brinkman with a run-producing knock down the left-field line.
The visitors wasted a 1-out Purdy double to deep left in the fifth and a 2-out wild pitch.
An Elida double play ended the Bath fifth.
Elida again threatened in the sixth, all with two outs. Snyder singled to center and moved to third on a double to left center by Logan Alexander, finishing Davis. Brinkman flied out to greet Horstman.
Stahr and Horstman walked with two down in the Wildcat sixth and a wild pitch moved them up. Stahr tried to steal home with Jenkins at the bat but was a dead duck.
The Bulldogs finally broke through again in the seventh. Ryan Cook blooped a hit to right and advanced on a Purdy groundout. After an Anderson walk, both runners advanced on A Watkins comebacker and Scored on a 2-run single to left by Josh Bull; he ended up on second after an error on the play. However, Morrison was caught looking at a called third strike to end the game.
The Bulldogs end the tournament and the summer season at 5-12.
