“When Bryan and I lived in Columbus, I was always busy doing something,” Weimerskirch said. “When we recently visited a friend in Florida, they were in a running club so I thought, why not. The Delphos Running Club fulfills three needs — exercise, social activity and charity.”
The club meets for registration at 7:15 p.m. at The Rustic Cafe on Thursdays and the 5K run starts at 7:30 p.m. Walkers, joggers and runners are welcome. The event is not timed but through generous donations of local businesses, lucky participants can win door prizes like gas cards. Whatever runners decide to give at registration benefits a local organization.
“I’ve also solicited sponsors each week,” Weimerskirch said. “So many people want to sponsor they are contacting me. They make a minimum donation and provide something for the runners like water.”
Sponsorship is a minimum of $50.
The first run was on May 15 and May’s collection of $520 went to Meals ‘til Monday, a program that provides a sack of food to school-aged children on Fridays during the school year to get them through the weekend.
Money collected this month will benefit SAFY’s Behavioral Health Center to purchase gas cards so patients can make it to appointments. Weimerskirch said the club is on target to raise $700 in June.
Membership in the club is easy — just show up. After a participant finishes their fifth event, they receive a free T-shirt.
“We’re very informal. We don’t push. Everyone knows what we’re doing,” Weimerskirch said. “We get 8-12 new members each week.”
Weather is a factor for the runs. Weimerskirch said as long as there is no lightning and the temperature is in high 30s to the low 40s, the race is on.
“I can see us still running in November up to and beyond Thanksgiving,” Weimerskirch said. “We’ll run as long as we can.”
