DELPHOS — There was lots of tail-wagging fun and smiles at Leisure Park Saturday afternoon as canines and their family members came together for Bark For Life Relay to raise donations for the American Cancer Society.

Cancer survivor Anne Laman served as the parade chairwoman. She also represented her husband Dr. Ed Laman, Delphos Animal Hospital’s predecessor, who could not attend the event.

Delphos Animal Hospital’s Dr. Bonnie Jones — chair of the event — said with the in-house efforts at Delphos Animal Hospital, the Relay For Life held on Friday night and the Bark For Life Saturday afternoon at Leisure Park, the fundraising event has raised over $6022. Donations will still be rolling in until Aug. 31.

“I am definitely expecting more, including corporate matches of at least $300 plus the additional teams yet to report in,” she said. “We will continue to sell the T-shirts we have left.”

Jones said this year 35 canines were registered for the event and 30 of those expected joined in for an enjoyable afternoon in a super park.

“I think that might be up by about 10-12 from last year,” she reported.

Everyone in attendance experienced an educational performance and demonstration by Lima Police Officer John Dunham and K-9 Bern. Dunham said Bern is a seven-year old, 114 pound German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia who is just like a kid.

“Bern takes his commands in German and finds cocaine, heroin and marijuana,” Dunham said.

Jones said there were 15 raffle prizes drawn and the top five winners were Cathy Wheeler, Emily Dirham, Christina Hemker, Brad Berry and Sue Hempfling. Other winners included Bob Ebbeskotte, Alice Zimmerly, Judy Newland, Tom Kohorst, Brenda Perkins, Ruth Lucke, Brendan Fuge, Carla Messer, Pam Vincent, and Tonya Bohyer.

“Our MVP teams include The Dave & Kelly Frost Family, Sharon Moorman Family & Friends, Team Dodger Brown (Laurie and Jay Brown), Bev and Mike Place, Vicki and Dan Kramer Family and Pam Wade and Jane Irwin Team,” Jones said excitedly. “I know there will be other MVP’s yet to report in.”

Jones gave a special thanks to Officer Dunham and K-9 Bern for their performance, Creamery owner Dan Warnement for supplying the delicious ice cream and Pam Wade and Jane Irwin for grilling and serving the brats and hotdogs.
