One Year Ago
The skies may have been clear but water poured down in Ottoville Saturday afternoon during the Waterball Contest, part of the 139th annual Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fireman’s Convention. The convention is capped by a parade with a trophy presentation and a raffle drawing.
25 Years Ago – 1989
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday Delphos has been awarded a deputy registrar office as a result of rebidding contracts. Ruth Sheeter, wife of current deputy registrar John Sheeter, said she received a telephone call at about 3 p.m. Wednesday from Steve Underwood of the state registrar’s office congratulating her on being the new deputy registrar.
Ruth Williams, 42, an oncology nurse at St. Rita’s Medical Center, has been named Nurse of Hope for Allen County by the American Cancer Society. A 1965 graduate of Elida High School, Williams began her career at the medical center in 1968 after graduating from the former St. Rita’s School of Nursing.
The Delphos Country Club on Shenk Road held its Ladies Invitational Tournament Wednesday. The women’s tournament carried out the theme of Flag Day with flags placed on each tee. Committee co-chairmen were Lois and Rita Scherger. Proximity markers were won by Mary Lou Vetter, closest to the pin on two; Rita Scherger, longest putt on nine; and Rita Clapp, closest to the pin with second shot.
50 Years Ago – 1964
An outdoor garden was the setting for the luncheon served by Mrs. William Strayer to the members of the Elida Garden Club when they met for their June meeting. Mrs. Richard Kieswetter announced the plans of the State OAGC convention being held at the Biltmore Hotel Aug. 13-14. Guests at the meeting were Mrs. Earl Gaskill and Mrs. Paul Sillin.
Our Ladies Cook and Sew 4-H Club held its fourth meeting this week at the home of Judy Klausing. The meeting was called to order by the vice president, Merri Lee Keith. It was announced that the annual 4-H chicken barbecue will be held June 27 at the Allen County Fairgrounds.
New officers were elected when the Ladies Aid of the Ottawa River United Church of Christ at Rimer met in the church social rooms for their June meeting. Mrs. William Syfert was in charge of the afternoon program. Mae Seitz gave the devotions. Mrs. Irvin Blockberger read the Scripture.
75 Years Ago – 1939
In honor of National Hotel Week, which is being observed the present week, William Lateer, proprietor of the Phelan Hotel, delivered an address on the subject of hotels, their importance to a community and the elements which make for their success, at the weekly meeting of the Delphos Kiwanis Club held at the Beckman Hotel. The program for the evening was in charge of the two hotel men in the club, Billy Irick and Billy Lateer.
Extensive plans have been practically completed for the fourth annual field meet to be sponsored by the Tri-County Beekeepers Association. The event will be held June 18 at Leininger’s Walnut Grove bee yard, two miles east of Delphos on Route 30-S. In case of inclement weather, the meeting will be held in the Leininger honey house on Lima Avenue.
