|Elida sweeps ACME twin-bill with Spencerville|

SPENCERVILLE — Elida’s ACME summer baseball team got the bats going versus Spencerville on a sun-splashed Saturday morning/afternoon, putting together 30 hits and 23 runs in a 12-4, 11-5 doubleheader sweep of the host Bearcats.
In game 1, Garrett Brinkman got the pitching win, going five innings (5 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 strikeouts, 1 base-on-balls; 68 pitches, 49 for strikes). Dylan Holcomb pitched two frames of 3-hit, 3-walk, run ball (2 Ks; 39 pitches, 22 strikes).
Brady Nolan took the loss for the hosts (6-plus IPs, 14 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, 4 BBs, 1 K; 120 pitches, 74 strikes), with Cole Market turning in an inning of relief (2 BBs, 2 Ks; 20 pitches, 8 strikes).
Travis Watkins led the Bulldog offense with a 3-for-4 game at the plate (2 runs), with Scott McDonnell going 2-for-2 (2 runs batted in), Dylan Holcomb (2 runs) and Owen Anderson (2 runs) 2-for-3 each and Ryan Cook 2-for-4 (3 RBIs, 2 runs).
Austin Gallimore had the only multi-hit game for the Bearcats in the opener, going 3-for-3, while Market knocked in two runs.
Elida took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a pair of walks (Anderson, Holcomb), a McDonnell sacrifice and back-to-back hits by Cook (1 RBI) and Brinkman (2 RBIs).
Spencerville tied it in the home half on a leadoff walk (Mitchell Youngpeter) and trio of hits, including an RBI 2-baser by Brady Becker (Youngpeter) and solo RBI hits by Gallimore (Becker) and Market (Gallimore).
Elida took the lead for good at 5-3 in the third on four hits, including run-producing knocks by Anderson (Austin Morrison) and McDonnell (Watkins).
The Bulldogs made it 7-3 in the fifth on a walk (Derek Snider); two hits, with one a run-scoring blooper by Holcomb; and a squeeze bunt by McDonnell (Anderson).
The Orange and Black made the lead 8-3 in the sixth on back-to-back singles by Watkins (with a stolen base) and a single by Snider.
Elida tacked on the final three runs in the seventh, piecing together an error and three base hits, one a 2-run bloop double to left by Cook (Holcomb, McDonnell) that brought Market to the mound. Cook eventually scored on a groundout by Brinkman.
Spencerville tallied its fourth run in its last at-bat on a leadoff single by Nolan, a double by Gallimore and a 1-out grounder by Market.
In game 2, Josh Bull got the win on the mound, tossing five frames (5 hits, 5 earned runs, 2 BBs, 7 Ks, 2 hit batters; 101 pitches, 59 strikes). Watkins threw the final two innings (2 BBs, 4 Ks; 37 pitches, 19 strikes).
Mitchell Youngpeter took the loss (3 2/3 IPs, 11 hits, 9 runs, 6 earned, 1 BB, 2 Ks, 1 hit batter; 85 pitches, 50 strikes), with Hunter French finishing up (3 1/3 IPs, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 1 BB, 1 K; 48 pitches, 28 strikes).
Bull went 4-for-5 (3 runs, 2 RBIs), while Watkins (3 RBIs), Austin Morrison (2 runs), Derek Snider, Tristan Edwards and Baylen Stinson (2 runs) each had two hits.
Nolan went 2-for-3, while Justin Thiery scored twice.
Elida scored the first run in the top of the first on a leadoff infield hit (Bull) and a throwing error, a sacrifice bunt by Morrison and a sac fly by Watkins.
Spencerville took the lead 2-1 in the home half on a leadoff walk (Justin Thiery), a steal, a wild ptich and a 1-out groundout by French, followed by a hit batter (Youngpeter), a wild pitch and a run-scoring hit by Becker.
The hosts scored their last tallies of the day in the home second. Red Wood led off with a walk and advanced on a Market groundout. Thiery was hit by a pitch with two down and Logan Rex loaded the bases on an infield hit. A wild pitch plated Wood and French knocked the other two in via a single.
Elida got within 5-2 in the visiting third on an infield single (Morrison), a stolen base and a 2-out RBI double by Snider.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with a 7-spot in the fourth, all with two outs, sending 11 to the dish. They had seven hits, with RBIs from Bull (Baylen Stinson), Morrison (Anderson), a double by Watkins (Bull) — interrupted by a wild pitch (Morrison), an error (Watkins) and a steal of home (Snider) — and an RBI double by Edwards that finished Youngpeter and made it 9-5.
The visitors made it 11-5 in the fifth on three safeties, with an RBI double by Bull (Stinson) and Watkins (Bull).
Elida added the final run of the day in the seventh on a leadoff hit batter (Anderson), a hit by Bull and a passed ball.
