LIMA — Patrick H. Bergfeld, 90, passed away 11:40 a.m. on Sunday at Elmcroft Assisted Living.

He was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Delphos to Claude and Caroline (O’Neil) Bergfeld, who preceded him in death.

 

On May 15, 1949, he married Dorothy Miller Bergfeld, who preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 1995.

 

Survivors include his children, Dennis P. (Susie) Bergfeld, Gregory J. (Myra G.) Bergfeld, Sue A. (Philip) Chiazza, David P. (Tammy A.) Bergfeld, and Jan M. Bergfeld-Horstman; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Claude (Mary) Bergfeld and Eugene (Sally) Bergfeld; and his sister, Caroline (Harry) Gallmeier.

He was also preceded in death by his three sisters, Mary Redding, Evelyn Moulin and Grace Bergfeld.

Patrick was raised in Delphos before joining the United States Navy at the beginning of World War II. He proudly served as a submariner. When he returned from the war, he married Dorothy, the love of his life. He began working at Ford Motor Company, retiring in 1984 as a machinist. He was a member of St. Gerard’s Catholic Church and his faith was very important to him. His other memberships include the VFW and Eagles, both of Lima. He enjoyed wintering in Ft. Myers, where he loved to ride his bicycle, sometimes up to 24 miles a day.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Jim Szobonya will officiate the service. Entombment will follow in Gethsemani Mausoleum with military rites by the US Navy and the VFW Post 1275.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. today at Chiles-Laman Funeral Cremation Services - Shawnee Chapel, where a parish wake service will begin at 7 p.m.
