DELPHOS — Jefferson’s young fast-pitch softball unit spotted an even younger visiting Perry a 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame of the teams’ Division IV Sectional contest Monday at Lady Wildcat Field.

After that, it was all Lady Wildcats.

The end result was a 12-2 6-inning rout.

“That is one area we have matured in this year. We fell behind and didn’t drop our heads; we fought back right away,” Jefferson coach Josiah Stober explained. “Our freshmen and sophomores aren’t playing like freshmen and sophomores anymore; one wouldn’t expect them to. They are starting to step up, no matter where we are putting them and when. It helps to have a senior leadoff hitter like Hannah (Sensibaugh) to follow.”

The Wildcats, with five sophs and five frosh on the varsity roster, were experienced compared to the one soph and nine frosh of the Commodores.

“We are extremely young; we start six freshmen most of the time and we’re stay playing like it,” Perry coach Bruce Wilhelm explained. “We had too many errors to begin with. We know we have to do everything better — pitching, hitting, defense, fielding — but I expect that as we mature more.”

The Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the sixth on three hits, two walks and a big error to end the game with two outs.

Sophomore Claire Thompson (3-11) went the distance to get the win for the Lady ’Cats (5 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 0 bases-on-balls, 5 strikeouts).

The offense was paced by Sensibaugh with a 2-for-4 days (3 runs scored, 3 stolen bases), along with a 2-for-3 day from sophomore Kiersten Teman (2 runs) and a 3-run-scored game by freshman Madison Jettinghoff.

Freshman Kylyn Collins also went the distance for the Commodores (0-17), going 5 2/3 frames (8 hits, 12 runs, 4 earned, 8 BBs, 4 Ks).

Her defense committed seven errors behind her.

Their top hitters were junior Courtland Fowler (2 runs scored) and senior Courtney Trent (1 run batted in), who both went 2-for-3.

Perry got an unearned run in the top of the first on a leadoff single to center by Fowler, with a 2-base error on the play putting her at third, from where she scored on a wild pitch.

Jefferson answered with two in the home half. Sensibaugh led off with a bloop behind third baseman Edon Godfrey, a steal, a comebacker by Thompson and a 3-base throwing error on a Jessica Pimpas grounder. Pimpas scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 edge.

Perry left a runner on second — Godfrey on a 2-out error and wild pitch — in the second.

The hosts made it 5-1 in the home half of that inning. Jettinghoff was plunked and Kiersten Teman walked. An out later, Danielle Harman sacrificed them both up and Sensibaugh slapped a single to center to get Jettinghoff home. On a double steal, Teman stole home and Sensibaugh got second: two errors on the play allowed her to score the team’s fifth tally. A Thompson single and consecutive walks to Pimpas and Samantha Branham loaded the bases but they were left loaded.

Perry got within 5-2 in the third on a 1-out line double to center by Fowler and a 2-out line double to right center by Trent.

Delphos stranded Teman at third on a 1-out bloop to short left center, a passed ball and a comebacker by Kaylin Hartsock.

The hosts made it 6-2 in the fourth on a leadoff free pass to Sensibaugh, a steal and two errors.

The Lady Commodores stranded a runner at first (2-out single by Collins) in the fifth.

Shayla Rice led off the home fifth with a 3-base error on a dropped fly ball and scored on a 2-base throwing error on Jettinghoff’s grounder. The latter took third on a Teman grounder and, after Hartsock walked, scored as Harman blooped a knock to right center, making it 8-2.

The visitors stranded two in the sixth: a 1-out single by Trent and an error off an Imani Watson grounder.

The Wildcats finished it in the home half. With one down, Branham lined a single to left. Pinch-runner Sophie Wilson advanced on a Rice grounder and touched the dish on a Jettinghoff single to left center; the latter taking second on the throw and scored courtesy of Teman’s knock into right, also taking second on the throw home and third on a wild pitch. Hartsock and Harman walked to load the bases and a 2-base error on Sensibaugh’s fly ball scored Teman and Hartsock to end the contest.

“We had eight hits and eight walks; we are showing better aggressiveness at the plate and yet good patience,” Stober added. “We aren’t swinging at many bad pitches. Claire has gotten much better at not walking batters; she is hitting her spots in the strike zone, throwing that change-up now regularly for strikes and keeping offenses more off-balanced. Our defense is more on its toes and making more plays behind her.”

Jefferson (3-13) advances to play 5 p.m. Thursday at Minster in a sectional final clash.
