Lady Wildcats wax Commodores in softball tourney

DELPHOS — Jefferson’s young fast-pitch softball unit spotted an even younger visiting Perry a 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame of the teams’ Division IV Sectional contest Monday at Lady Wildcat Field.

After that, it was all Lady Wildcats.

The end result was a 12-2 6-inning rout.

Jefferson (3-13) advances to play 5 p.m. Thursday at Minster in a sectional final clash.


The Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the sixth on three hits, two walks and a big error to end the game with two outs.


Sophomore Claire Thompson (3-11) went the distance to get the win for the Lady ’Cats (5 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 0 bases-on-balls, 5 strikeouts).

The offense was paced by senior leadoff hitter Hannah Sensibaugh with a 2-for-4 days (3 runs scored, 3 stolen bases), along with a 2-for-3 day from sophomore Kierstan Teman (2 runs) and a 3-run-scored game by freshman Madison Jettinghoff.

Freshman Kylyn Collins also went the distance for the Commodores (0-17), going 5 2/3 frames (8 hits, 12 runs, 4 earned, 8 BBs, 4 Ks).

Her defense committed seven errors.

Their top hitters were junior Courtland Fowler (2 runs scored) and senior Courtney Trent (1 run batted in), who both went 2-for-3.

Jefferson entertains Kalida 5 p.m. today in the regular season.

Perry hosts Spencerville today.

Fort Recovery doubles up St. John’s

DELPHOS — The Fort Recovery Indians defeated the St. John’s Blue Jays 18-9 at Stadium Park on Monday.

The Indians hit five doubles and had a total of 12 hits (along with 10 walks) to improve to 13-3 (4-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference).

Fort Recovery’s Schoerer pitched the first three innings of the game, allowing only one earned run, then came back to pitch the final two after the Jays cut the lead down to 14-7.

Gage Seffernick took the loss for the Jays, who fall to 2-18 (0-6 MA.)

The Indians were led by Cole Wendel with three hits and Mitch Stammen scored four runs.

J.R.Keirns had a single to drive in two and Jacob Youngpeter added a pair of runs batted in with a double for the Blue Jays.

The Jays host New Bremen tonight.

Johnston, Lady Bearcats shut out Lancers

SPENCERVILLE — Host Spencerville defeated Lincolnview 10-0 in six innings in Division IV Sectional softball Monday night at home.

Senior Tori Johnston (8-6) hurled a 4-hit complete-game shutout, walking three, whiffing 10).

Ashley McClure took the loss, going four frames (4 hits, 7 runs, 7 BBs, 4 Ks).

Spencerville (11-12), the fifth seed, advances to battle third-seed Marion Local 5 p.m. Thursday.

The Bearcats are slated to visit Perry today.

Lady Green, Thunderbirds capture Ottoville track tri

OTTOVILLE — The Ottoville girls track team and the Lima Central Catholic boys capture the Ottoville track and field tri-meet Monday at Bob Kapel Memorial Track.

The Lady Green outdistanced Fort Jennings and the Lady Thunderbirds 57-52-32.

In the boys race, the T-Birds got by the Big Green boys and the Musketeers 59-48-47.

Fort Jennings visits Continental at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Defiance wallops Elida in WBL baseball

ELIDA — Defiance rode the combined 6-hitter of Derek Turner and Michael Hendricks and a 13-hit attack to bounce Elida in Western Buckeye League baseball action Monday at Ed Sandy Memorial Field.

Turner went 6 1/3 innings (6 hits, 1 unearned run, 12 strikeouts) and Hendricks mopped up with two strikeouts.

Max Stambaugh went the distance for the host Bulldogs (12 hits, 10 runs, 9 earned, 2 Ks, 3 walks).

Garret Sierra went 3-for-4 for the visitors (1 run scored, 1 run batted in), while Turner (run, RBI), Shay Smiddy (2 runs, 1 RBI) and Austin Hancock (2 runs, 1 RBI) each went 2-for-4.

Alan Tyrrell went 2-for-3 for the hosts.

Elida visits St. Marys Memorial 5 p.m. Thursday in Division II sectional action.
