Mary Jo Berelsman was the Derby Hat Contest winner Saturday during St. John’s Benefit Auction. Following the Derby theme, there was also horse racing. Top drawing winners were: Tom and Sue Wiechart - $1,000; Eric and Trina Pohlman - $500; Gary and Marilyn Holdgreve - $300; and Dan “Boomer” and Janet Bonifas - $200.

 

25 Years Ago – 1989

 

Seventh grade students from Delphos Middle School recently participated in the Greater Toledo Council of Teachers of Mathematics Test. Winning monetary awards for their participation were Missy Rozelle, Phillip Lawrence, Michael Domin, Mike Gilbert, and Ryan Skelly. Also participating were Jason Howe, James Schrader, Ben Rahrig, Greg Armstrong and Kristi Poling.

 

John Odenweller, chairman of the Delphos Lions Club summer youth baseball program, presented cash prizes to the top three booster ticket salesmen. Winners were Chet Richardson, son of Chuck and Sharon Richardson, Heath Wisher, son of Larry and Chris Wisher, and Brad Klausing, son of Denny and Connie Klausing. Top sales honors went to Wisher, who sold 100 tickets.

 

Lori Von Lehmden, sophomore at Fort Jennings High School, received a “perfect superior,” receiving a perfect score of 40 out of a possible 40 points at the state science fair in Delaware. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Von Lehmden of Fort Jennings.

 

50 Years Ago – 1964

 

The Delphos Aerie No. 471 Fraternal Order of Eagles, will celebrate Mother’s Day in style Sunday with a parade and a program at Jefferson High School’s auditorium. Lucky mothers will be presented bouquets of flowers. Stella Wieging has been selected as the Eagles’ Auxiliary “Mother of the Year.”

 

Estella Schwinnen will head the Landeck Altar Rosary Society this coming year as a result of elections of officers for the Society held at a recent meeting. Assisting her will be Isabella Gengler, president elect; Edna Freund, vice president; Mamie Kill, secretary and Adella Etzkorn, treasurer.

 

Bunching hits in the first and third innings of their game with the Van Wert Cougars Monday afternoon at Stadium Park gave the Blue Jays their fifth win of the season. The Jays scored five runs on eight hits for a 5-4 win. Batting honors went to Jerry Carder with a pair of doubles, to Jim Carder with a double and a triple and to George Lang, who had a double and went two for two at the plate.

 

75 Years Ago – 1939

 

“Spring Feber,” a three-act play, will be given by the students of the senior class of Ottoville High School on Sunday and Monday evenings. Cast members include Eugene Brinkman, Ed. Horstman, Ralph Hoehn, Marceil Wannemacher, Alice Odenweller, Celeste Siler, Marcella Langhals, Joseph Mittlekamp, Jane Miller, Irene Trenkamp, Ray Wannemacher and John Rellinger.

 

The Delphos Merchants baseball team will play their first Northwestern Ohio League game on May 7. The Merchants will battle Fort Brown at that place in the opening contest. Gilbert Sanders of Fort Jennings, who is managing the local aggregation this year, is hopeful that the Delphos team will be in condition for play Sunday.

 

Further plans were made for the annual Jefferson alumni banquet and dance when members of the committees in charge met Thursday night at the home of Howard Raabe, president of the association for this year. It was decided the banquet will be served May 26. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Staup, announced that a novel entertainment will be provided.
