DELPHOS — One bad inning.

That was the difference in Monday afternoon’s Spencerville at Jefferson Northwest Conference fast-pitch softball tussle at Lady Wildcat Field in Delphos.

The visiting Lady Bearcats put in a 9-spot in the second frame to lead to a 10-0 5-inning triumph.

The Lady Bearcats (7-5, 1-3 NWC) took advantage of nine hits, two free passes and two errors to send 14 to the dish in that fateful inning.

“It’s that one inning that it fell apart. Spencerville is a solid softball team and they hit the ball very well in that inning,” Jefferson head man Josiah Stober acknowledged. “They also pitched well and we had few chances. They are an up-and-coming team and program and you are seeing the results. We are getting better but it doesn’t always show. We are a team in progress.”

That’s also what Spencerville head coach Jeff Johnston believes.

“We’ve come a long way in my two years here. It started with the pitching,” he added. “We don’t walk many — we have a great strikeouts-to-walks ratio; our pitchers throw strikes and helps our defense. Offensively, we’re up and down but we’re showing good progress there as well. It helps to finally have enough numbers for a JV team.”

Tori Johnston (4-3) got the win with four frames of 1-hit ball (1 walk, 1 hit batter, 7 strikeouts). Alex Shumate threw an inning of 3-K relief.

Jefferson (1-9, 0-3) sophomore Claire Thompson (1-6) took the loss (5 innings, 11 hits, 10 runs, 9 earned, 2 BBs).

Abby Parkins had the only hit for the Lady Wildcats, Kimber Kill was walked and Sophie Wilson was hit by a pitch.

Caitlyn Probst led the Bearcat offense by going 3-for-3, including a triple and double, and adding three ribbies. Shumate was 2-for-3.

Jefferson had the first threat in the home half of the first on a 2-out Shayla Rice grounder that was misplayed but she was forced at second by Thompson.

With one down in the second, Haleigh Mull walked and courtesy-runner Ashley King scored as Probst tripled to the left-field corner. In turn, she scored as Shumate single to left; the batter got to second on a miscue on the play. She moved up on a wild pitch. Megan Miller walked and stole second. Amber Hallard plated Shumate with a bloop to left. Tiffany Work singled to center to plate Miller; an error on the play allowed the runners to move up a base. Amanda Crider’s base knock plated Hallard for a 5-0 edge. Rider stole second. Johnston beat out an infield hit to short, getting Work in and putting runners on the corners. Mackenzie Ringwald blooped a hit to right to get Crider in and move courtesy-runner Elisha Satterfield to third, with the batter taking second on the throw. Mull bounced out to short to get Satterfield home for the 8-nil lead. Probst beat out an infield hit to short that got Ringwald to touch the dish and a 9-0 edge.

The Wildcats tried to answer right away. With one down in the home second, Wilson was hit by a pitch; and out later, she stood at third after a 2-base error on Sarah Thitoff’s fly ball. Kimber Kill walked but the bases remained loaded.

Spencerville tacked on its 10th run in the fourth. With one out, Ringwald got aboard via an error, stole second with two outs and scored as Probst doubled to the left-field corner.

Delphos got a 2-out bloop hit to right by Parkins in the home fourth but she stayed there.

Spencerville’s last base-runner came with two down in the fifth as Satterfield doubled to deep left but she was gunned down at third on a Parkins-Hannah Sensibaugh-Rice relay.
