Jays garner 1st diamond win of 2014

KALIDA — St. John’s has struggled to put a winning formula together on the baseball diamond so far in 2014.

The Blue Jays finally got it together Monday night, holding off Kalida 10-8 in non-league action at Kalida’s Holy Name Field.

Gage Seffernick led the Blue Jay offense with three hits. Andy May had three walks and three runs batted in, while Kyle Pohlman totaled three bases-on-balls, Ben Wrasman three RBIs and T.J. Hoersten two RBIs.

Colton Farrell paced the Wildcats with a pair of base hits and Trent Gerding worked his way for three walks.

The Jays won despite committing seven errors.

St. John’s hosts Fort Recovery tonight.

Kalida hosts Arlington this afternoon.

Jefferson keeps Lincolnview baseballers winless

DELPHOS — Jefferson’s baseball crew rode the solid pitching of Tyler Rice and an offense that got rolling early to an 8-3 Northwest Conference victory Monday afternoon at Wildcat Field.

Rice went six innings in giving up three hits and three earned runs; he walked five and fanned five.

Eli Farmer took the loss in going 4 1/3 innings, yielding 10 hits, eight runs (6 earned), two walks and fanning a pair.

Leading the Jefferson hitters were Austin Jettinghoff (2-2, 2 doubles, 2 runs batted in), Rice (2-3, 2 doubles, RBI), Ross Thompson (2-4, double, RBI) and Ryan Bullinger (2-4, RBI).

Conner McCleery was 1-for-3 for the Lancers, knocking in two.

Jefferson (5-5, 1-1 NWC) visits Ottoville today and Perry Wednesday.

Lincolnview (0-7, 0-2 NWC) hosts LCC this afternoon and visits St. Henry Wednesday.

Miller City bops Musketeers in PCL baseball

MILLER CITY — It was a battle of aces as Miller City and Fort Jennings squared off in Putnam County League action Monday afternoon.

The Wildcats’ Ross Lehman outdueled the Musketeers’ Ryan Rau as Miller City claimed a 7-1 win on an overcast afternoon.

Miller City (1-0, 4-2) took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings before the Musketeers (1-2, 2-7) came back with a run in the top of the fifth inning.

The Wildcats put the game away in the bottom of the sixth as they pushed across five runs for the final score. Miller City sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lehman (2-1) recorded the win as he went the distance allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Jackson Lammers and Hunter Berner both had two hits for Miller City.

Rau took the loss for Ft. Jennings as he allowed seven runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks in 6 1/3 innings. Dylan Van Loo got the final two outs of the Wildcat sixth.

Jennings hosts St. John’s Wednesday.

Pilots edge Bulldogs

AYERSVILLE — Ayersville scored all the runs it needed in the first two frames and a trio of pitchers made it stand up in downing Elida 3-2 in non-league baseball activity Monday at Ayersville.

Luke Reed (winning pitcher), Jacob Kahle and Luke Lawson (save) combined to limit Elida to six hits and two runs (1 earned), walking two and fanning eight.

Garrett Brinkman took the hard-luck loss in going the distance, ceding three hits, four bases-on-balls and three runs (2 earned). He struck out four.

Austin Morrison (run) led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-3 game at the plate and Adam Purdy was 2-for-4 (run batted in).

Elida hosts Western Buckeye League power Defiance today.

Weber paces Yellow Jacket golfers

DEFIANCE — Ottoville High School graduate Zach Weber and current Defiance College freshman Zach Weber led the Yellow Jackets to a sixth-place finish this past weekend at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance.

He shot a matching pair of 76s on both Saturday and Sunday; his 2-day total of 152 was good enough to place him 11th overall.

DC shot a team total of 312 Saturday and 313 Sunday.

The Jackets will play again April 26-27 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
