LIMA — The American Red of West Central Ohio recognized volunteers in Allen County at its annual awards event held Thursday at the Chapter House, 610 S. Collett St., Lima.
Those recognized included volunteers who help with blood drives, assist at fundraising events, do casework with Services to the Armed Forces, help in the office and are on the scene assisting disaster victims, locally and nationally.
The Clara Barton Award recognizes a volunteer who has displayed significant leadership and commitment to the Red Cross mission. The Volunteer of the Year Award honors a volunteer who tirelessly carries out the mission of the Red Cross. Several other awards were also given in each county.
The Allen County Chapter’s Clara Barton Award was presented to Larry Flick of Elida. Flick, a volunteer since 1988, provides leadership at the local level with the Disaster Action Team, but also is an integral part of the regional disaster support unit for the Northwest Ohio Region.
The Allen County Chapter’s Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Carol Hume of Cridersville and Janet Eilerman of Lima. Hume organizes and recruits volunteers for the blood drives held at the Chapter House and other drives in the county as needed. Eilerman has volunteered as an office receptionist since 2002 and has also helped with special events as needed.
The Allen County Chapter’s Youth of the Year Award was given to Jasmine Binod, a student at Shawnee High School. She began volunteering with the Red Cross in 2013 and helps at the chapter blood drives and other blood drives in the county as needed.
Your Hometown Stations in Lima received the Organization/Business of the Year Award in Allen County for the station’s commitment to furthering the cause of the Red Cross with PSAs as well as Public Service Director Tom Hendrixson’s leadership in creating the PSAs.
The Frances Miller Award was presented to chapter board member Paul Brown of Lima for his service, commitment and dedication to the Red Cross. Brown is a board member and has volunteer with the Red Cross since 1988.
The Flickinger Leadership Award was presented to volunteer Timothy “Bo” McComas of Lima. McComas, a volunteer since 2008. He is a Services to Armed Forces caseworker, serves on the Disaster Action Team and gives Be Red Cross Ready presentations at schools.
