One Year Ago

Delphos Cub Scout Pack 42 held its annual Pinewood Derby earlier this month. Design winners are Drew Palte, Mark Stemen and Adam Bockey. The top two design winners will go on to District competition held at UNOH on April 13 in the 200 building in the gymnasium.

25 Years Ago – 1989

Allen County unit of the American Cancer Society will conduct its annual door-to-door crusade April 8-17. Three persons who will be collecting funds in Delphos and Marion Township are Julie Fuerst, neighborhood captain for Delphos, Gwen Rohrbacher, chairwoman for Marion Township, and Florence Trentman, neighborhood captain for Delphos.

Presenting a skit to St. John’s Elementary students on the dangers of drugs and alcohol were members of the school’s Institute for Drug and Alcohol Awareness: Todd Schulte, Bill Suever, Rachel Brickner, Mollie Calvelage, Shawna Pelasky, Mark Spieles, Nickie Maas, Becky Baughn and Kevin Schimmoeller.

Twenty-six guest couples from Greenville, Cridersville, Lima, Delphos (Helm Swingers), Piqua and Versailles attended the St. Marys Tri-Squares club dance. Thirty-three couples from Tri-Squares also attended. Serving refreshments were Jack and Sue Severns, Marlin and Marty Kohlhorst, Rick and Belinda Nagle and Jerry and Stacy Tebbe.

50 Years Ago – 1964

Ned Garver, former great pitcher with the old St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics and Los Angeles Angels, visited The Herald yesterday with reference to The Herald-sponsored Cooking School. Garver is currently employed as public relations representative for Eckert Packing Co., Defiance.

One of Delphos’ most active Child Conservation League groups, the Senior CCL, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its founding with a buffet supper and program April 19 in the social rooms of Trinity Methodist Church. The first Child Conservation League group in Delphos, Senior CCL was organized in 1939, with 20 charter members.

Business was conducted at the meeting of Phi Delta Sorority Monday evening. The session was held in the home of Mrs. Mack Endsley, Pinehurst Drive. Joan Dowing of Lima was the guest speaker. She is a member of the Amil Teller Players of Lima. Attendance prizes went to Mrs. James Weger and Mrs. Ronald Hageman.

75 Years Ago – 1939

The members of the Young Ladies Sodality and the CYO of St. John’s parish are bending effort to make the Easter dance a success financially as well as socially. The affair will be given in St. John’s auditorium Easter Sunday night with Norman Geier and his orchestra playing for the dancing. Tickets for the dance are now on sale. Gerald Will has charge of the sale to high school students.

Mrs. Samuel Roberts, North Maple Street, received the members of Sorosis into her home Thursday afternoon. “Life of William Tyndale and His Version of the Bible,” was prepared by Mrs. J. G. E. Mittermaier and read by Mrs. E. Burnett. “The Loves of the King,” was given by Mrs. W. L. Carter.

The members of the Young Ladies and Young Men’s Sodality of St. Joseph’s Church, Fort Jennings, will present a comedy entitled “Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick” at Jennings Memorial Hall on April 16. Cast members include Richard Calvelage, Bert Wieging, Arthur Kramer, Mary Brockman, Elvera Hohenbrink, Martha Boehmer and Florence Calvelage.
