ROCKFORD — Jefferson baseball coach Doug Geary felt that offense would make or break his 2014 team.

The latter was on display as the Wildcats lost a pair of pitchers’ duels to Parkway — 2-1, 1-0 — on a gorgeous but chilly Saturday afternoon at Rockford’s Don Black Field.

Wyatt Ferver’s solo blast in the bottom of the sixth frame gave southpaw Brody Adam (1-0) the complete-game win (7 innings, 2 hits, 1 unearned run, 3 bases-on-balls, 5 strikeouts; 103 pitches, 57 for strikes).

He outdueled Jefferson starter Ross Thompson (5 IPs, 4 hits, 1 unearned run, 1 BB, 5 Ks) and Austin Jettinghoff (0-1; 1 IP, 1 hit, 1 earned run, 1 K).

Jordan Herron and Ryan Bullinger had the only base hits for the Wildcats.

In game 2, the Panthers (3-1) pushed across an unearned run in the third to back right-hander Felver (1-1) 4-hit shutout (7 IPs, 3 BBs, 5 Ks; 109 pitches, 62 for strikes).

Tyler Rice (0-1) almost matched Felver, pitching a no-hitter in going six frames (2 BBs, 5 Ks; 77 pitches, 49 strikes).

Thompson went 2-for-3 and Bullinger and Gage Mercer (double) had all of the Wildcat (2-2) hits.

Jefferson visits Miller City 5 p.m. Tuesday.
