Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would resign on Feb. 28 because he was simply too infirm to carry on – the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March.
25 Years Ago – 1989
Lima Chapter Daughters of American Revolution “Good Citizen” winners will be recognized Feb. 18 at Lima Memorial Hall. Winners include Julie Friesen of Bluffton, Kevin Connor of Allen East, Kerry Shackleford of Elida, Jill Etgen of Delphos, Erin Sullivan of Lima Central Catholic, Bill Gladwell of Perry, Sara Sampson of Shawnee and Chuck Mulholland of Spencerville.
Wassenberg Art Center, Van Wert, recently held an awards ceremony for the 1989 Scholastic Art Exhibit which was regional competition with 64 schools competing. Winning from Jefferson Senior High School were Roger Klenz, Nikki Siefker, Tonia Grothous, Paul Schmelzer and Rachael Wannemacher.
The St. John’s Lady Blue Jays waited until their final game of the season to put their second “w” in the score book. They hosted Mendon Union Thursday and upended the Pirates 48-39. Two Blue Jays were in double digits. Lisa Sadler connected for 18 with Jodi Rees adding 12.
50 Years Ago – 1964
Overwhelming House approval of a sweeping civil rights bill gave its backers new confidence Tuesday that they could get the measure safely past a certain Senate filibuster. It is designed to wipe out discrimination in voting, public accommodations, employment, education and use of federal funds.
St. John’s Rosary Altar Society held its February meeting Monday evening in the Little Theater of the school with Mrs. Leo Fischer, president, in charge. Mrs. Gilbert Hedrick, communications chairman, told the audience that the parents T. V. Code leaflet will be distributed to all school children. She then introduced the Rev. Francis A. Gallagher, speaker for the evening.
There were 43 members at the meeting of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary Monday evening in the Eagles club rooms. Reports were presented by the auxiliary treasurer Helen Vance, secretary Dolores Hoffman, visiting chairman Sadie Baumgarte, chairman of trustees Edna Kortokrax and by chairman of investigation Rita Miller.
75 Years Ago – 1939
Eugenio, Cardinal Pacelli, assuming the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church, convoked a world conclave of cardinals today to elect a pope in succession to Pius XI. Pope Pius died Thursday after successive attacks of cardiac asthma and other complications following upon the rapid development of influenza.
The members of the Freshmen class at Jefferson High School enjoyed a party at the high school building Thursday night. There was a potluck dinner and games and contests followed in the gymnasium. The group also did the Lambeth Walk and the Virginia Reel. Faculty members who were present were E. W. Bell, superintendent; Misses Hart, Beiler, Dill and Kouts, and Principal Lawrence Schmidt and Frank Kurth.
As a part of their geography assignment on “Our Forest Resources,” the pupils of the seventh grade of St. John’s Portable have built an exhibit which deals with the lumber industry. The teacher and students are grateful to the following for their part in making the exhibit possible: Henry Lange, C. W. Obermeyer, Recker’s, Scherger Monument Company, Mr. Wiechart and Hortense Metcalfe.
