One Year Ago

Brelynn Ava Reames is the 2013 Delphos New Year’s Baby. She was born at 4:21 a.m. on Jan.6 at Lima Memorial Hospital to Erica Stransky and Zac Reames of Delphos. Grandparents are Jeff and Tess Duel of Delphos, the late Bryan Reames, Tonya Stransky of Delphos, Mike Stransky of Ada and Ray (Melissa) Hackel of Shreveport, La.

25 Years Ago – 1989

Delphos Public Library Board of Trustees held an election of officers at its Wednesday meeting. Margaret Fischer was elected president; Mel Westrich was re-elected vice president; and Tom Hoersten was re-elected secretary. James Weger was renamed clerk-treasurer. Other members of the board are Bruce Sommers, Ron Elwer, Jane Noonan and newly appointed Margene Freund.

Thursday night at Jefferson High School, the much anticipated matchup between the Crestview Knights and the Jefferson Wildcats took place in what was billed to be a knockdown-dragout battle for sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference. The host squad took advantage of a strong third period by outscoring Crestview 19-12 to take sole command of the contest on their way to a convincing 49-38 win.

Fort Recovery’s 6-1 sophomore center, Lynn Bihn, played three quarters of basketball and pulled the plug on any hopes the Blue Jay girls had for a Midwest Athletic Conference win. The final score was 76-25. While the Jays put in eight points in the last period on a goal and two free throws by Missy Hilvers, a basket from 12 feet by Chris Hughes and a free toss each by Holly Jacomet and freshman substitute Sue Klausing, the Indians had their best offensive quarter of the contest.

50 Years Ago – 1964

Nell Thompson was elected president of Delta Omicron Phi Sorority during a meeting of the group held at the home of Norma Jean Ditto. Elected to serve with her during the coming year were Claudine Thompson, vice president; Margaret Ditto, secretary; Helen Kitson, treasurer; and Rosalie Zuber, sergeant-at-arms.

Mrs. Andy Altenburger entertained the Once-A-Month Club at her home in Ottoville this past week with first prize going to Mrs. Basil Alt, second to Mrs. Don Altenburger and low to Mrs. Hubert Altenburger. Mrs. Donald Altenburger received the traveling prize.

Mrs. Ray Myers of Rimer was hostess to the members of the Ladies Aid of the Ottawa River United Church of Christ this past week with a carry-in dinner being served at noon. Letters from former members were read and a communication was read from Mr. and Mrs. Larry Risser, former youth counselors for the church, now stationed in Hamberg, Germany.

75 Years Ago – 1939

Members of Delphos Aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles, will celebrate the making of the annual membership quota at a special entertainment to be held Friday night at the Eagles hall. A record attendance is expected Monday night at the regular meeting when the monthly athletic show will be given. Eric Von Shafer will mix with Smiley Kaiser and Longsworth will attempt to floor Gil Lautzenheiser.

Members of Commemorative Post, American Legion, met Thursday night in regular session at their hall. Preliminary plans were made for the annual Legion Banquet which will be held Feb. 2. The banquet will be served at the Jefferson High School by the Delphos Band Mothers.

Delphos ping-pong players will represent this city in the Allen County tournament which will be held at Lima on Saturday morning. The winners of the county tournament will be held at Toledo. The tournament for players from 10 to 15 years of age was held on Thursday night. Carroll “Archie” Metcalfe won the tournament with Bob Robinson as runner-up.
