Bernard R. Hines, 75, of Elida died at 8:45 p.m. Monday at St. Rita’s Medical Center.

He was born June 23, 1938, in Van Wert County to Virgil L. and Ilo I. (Gipe) Hines, who preceded him in death.

On June 2, 1961, he married Vivian Rekart, who survives in Elida.

He was a very proud father of seven children, Rickey (Lynn) Hines of Delphos, Marshall (Lori) Hines of Waynesfield, Randall (Judy Wieging) Hines of Delphos, Brian Hines of Delphos, Christine (Bill Wannemacher) Robbins of Ottoville, Rhonda (Tim) Harmon of Quincy and Pamela (Brian) Bridges of Hilliard. Other survivors include a sister, Nancy (Bill) Winters of New Haven; a brother, Richard (Marlene) Hines of Union City; two brothers-in-law, Keith Beams of Van Wert and Jerry Goins of Scott; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hines was also preceded in death by four sisters, Deborah Ann Hines, Doris Hines Satterfield, Barbara Beams and Judy Goins.

He worked at Fruehauf for 33 years and then retired from Goodyear. He also served in the US Air Force.

He was a member of Delphos St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church, VFW, Eagles and Gomer Dads Club.

He loved to play cards and travel. Through the Gomer Dads Club, he helped start the girls softball team. He was an avid outdoorsman and an accomplished hunter and fisherman. He was the Charter Captain of the “Lucky 7” at Lake Erie. In 1990, his deer was entered into the Boone and Crockett record book. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church, where the Delphos Veterans Council will conduct military graveside rites following the Mass. Burial will take place at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, where a Parish Wake will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delphos Veterans Council.
