One Year Ago

St. John’s High School Junior Optimists recently made blankets for the Delphos Community Christmas Project. They also decorated a Christmas tree for the annual Delphos Canal Commission Christmas Tree Festival.

25 Years Ago – 1988

The twelfth annual Delphos Community Christmas Project is under way. “Committee members, Kay Best, Dianna Hetrick, Sharyl Odenweller and treasurer Jerome Schmit have had their organizational meeting and are ready to begin,” said Edna Fischer, project chairwoman. St. Vincent de Paul Society will again be assisting by providing and delivering food baskets.

Students in Elida Elementary School, Gomer, in conjunction with Children’s Book Week, celebrated Mickey Mouse’s 60th birthday with a Disney costume contest. Some of the winners included Sara Cochrell as Minnie Mouse; Jimmy McClain as Mickey Mouse; Samantha Rachlin as Snow White; Jimmy Patrick as Tigger; Dean Alger as Robin Hood, Brad Curtis as Dopey; Dustin Clevenger as Captain Hook, and second grader Chad Graham as Pinocchio.

The Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Ohio Junior Catholic Sons of Court Delphos 707, recently held their mass for installation and reception of new members. Officers installed were Molly Calvelage, JCDA president; Dana Dempsey, first vice president; Hope Kill, second vice president; Charla Gossard, secretary; and Michelle Sterling, reporter. Mike Mueller, JCSA president; John Shaw, first vice president; Eric Burgei, second vice president; Erik Kill, secretary; and Matt Hemker, reporter.

50 Years Ago – 1963

Jack Ricker, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ricker of Fort Jennings, will be among the Ohio exhibitors at the 1963 International Livestock Exposition to be held Nov. 29 to Dec. 7 in Chicago. A purebred Angus steer and three Hampshire hogs will be exhibited by Ricker in the junior division in which 4-H and FFA members from many states will compete in showing steers, lambs and hogs they have raised as club projects.

Mrs. Cletus Schuerman was elected president of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia of Fort Jennings at a meeting held recently in Memorial Hall. The present president, Mrs. Edmund Wieging was in charge of the business session when plans were made for the annual Christmas party to be held Dec. 11 in Memorial Hall. Mrs. Clarence Jostpille was appointed chairman for the holiday event.

“Give and Be Thankful,” was the theme of the program when the Ladies Aid of the Ottawa River Church at Rimer met in the country home of Mrs. Kenneth Jameson recently. A report on the Delmo Foundation was given by Mrs. William Syfert. Members were asked to donate food for the Pilgrim Fellowship bake sale.

75 Years Ago – 1938

Commemorative Post American Legion is playing Santa Claus to a large number of Delphos children again this year. The Legion Post is again sponsoring a WPA toy project and is asking the cooperation of Delphos citizens in the worthy cause. Officials of the post are asking Delphos citizens to provide old lumber or cast-off toys for the project. Paint of various colors is also needed for the work.

Mrs. E. W. Bell conducted the praise service at the Presbyterian Church Thursday evening. The service is held annually under the sponsorship of the Woman’s Home and Foreign Missionary Society of the church. A playlet was presented by Mrs. Arthur G. Moon. Taking part were Mrs. Earl Scott, Mrs. Arnold Scott, Mrs. R. A. Armstrong, Mrs. Albert Evans, Mrs. Oris Sawmiller, Mrs. Lawrence Schmidt and Barbara Edwards.

Five men, representing the Delphos Boy Scout organization, were in attendance at a Scouters Appreciation Dinner, annual Shawnee Area Scouters Convention, which was held Thursday evening at the Barr Hotel in Lima. Delphos men who attended were Ray Redd, John Lloyd, Harry D. Bellis, Ferman Clinger and E. W. Bell.
