25 Years Ago – 1988
Delphos Chapter of Future Farmers of America, which includes students from Jefferson Senior High School and St. John’s High School, recently competed in a plowing contest held at the Joseph Youngpeter farm on Sharf Road. Winners were, first, Jim Friedrich; second, Mark Youngpeter; and tied for third were Todd Horstman and Scott Gengler.
Delphos native Clinton Miller III will represent the United Transportation Union Wednesday in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Miller’s wife, Betts, eldest daughter, Emily, and his father, Dr. Clint Miller, of Delphos will be in the high court’s visitors’ gallery when he argues the case.
Several Delphos runners competed in the Lima Memorial Hospital Sports Medicine Center races Oct. 30 at Ohio State University-Lima Campus. In the half-marathon, Dave Alt was 11th overall and second in the 34-39 age group. Also winning age group awards were Kev Hellman, Mike Schlereth and Steve Hellman. Other Delphos runners were Brian Warnecke, Trav Pittner and Jason Ostendorf.
50 Years Ago – 1963
Rebellious marine, army and air force units staged a coup Friday aimed at overthrowing President Ngo Dinh Diem. The rebels appeared to be in virtual control of Saigon, South Vietnam and other parts of the country except for the immediate area around the presidential palace. The United States has 15,000 troops in South Vietnam and many of them are stationed in the capital.
God and Country awards will be presented to David Snider and Philip Hawkey of the Columbus Grove Explorers and to Dean Hitchcock, a member of the Scouts, during the 10:30 a.m. services Sunday in the Methodist Church in that community. The Rev. Paul Cramer will make the presentations.
Mrs. Charles H. Myers was hostess to the members of the Lima Deanery Executive Board at her home east of Delphos Wednesday. Myers is the outgoing president of the Lima Deanery, National Council of Catholic Women, and Bertille Schuerman of Fort Jennings is the incoming president.
75 Years Ago – 1938
Three members of the Class of 1930, St. John’s High School, held a class reunion, their first since graduation, at the home of Mrs. Nick Hummer. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Holdgreve, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Paul King, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Grewe, Martha Rosselit, Dorothy Hummer, Pauline Wrocklage, Alice Jettinghoff, Agnes Kimmet, Viola Schmit, Claud Louth and Eugene Noonan.
An exceptionally large number of Eagles were in attendance Monday night at the annual Halloween masked ball. Those receiving awards for best costume were Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDonald, best appearing couple; Chester Moorman and Nile McDonel, best dressed couple; Mrs. John Goergens and Mrs. Marion Alspach, most comic couple; Carl Imber, best dressed man; Mrs. Bonnront, best dressed woman; and Roy Baker Jr., best dressed child.
The members of the Tourist Club met Monday evening at the home of Mrs. J. V. DeWeese, East Third Street. Mrs. Ethel Edwards presented a review of “Life of an Ordinary Woman.” Mrs. John Horine gave a reading “Country Kitchen.” A sketch of “King Gustav” was given by Henrietta Eysenbach.
