VAN WERT — The YMCA of Van Wert County will hold a 40-day triathlon for both members and potential members. Registration begins today and is just $15 for members and $20 for potential members. Those wishing to register can do so on the YMCA website at www.vwymca.org or by calling the Y at 419-238-0443. The triathlon will run from Nov. 17 through Dec. 26.
Those registered will have 40 days to complete an actual triathlon’s 26.2 marathon miles, 2.4 miles of swimming or 15,000 meters rowing and 112 miles of cycling. Marathon miles can be completed by walking or running, or using an elliptical machine or stair master (anything that tracks mileage). Participation in YMCA group fitness classes counts towards your marathon mileage and participation in a cycling class counts towards the cycling portion of the triathlon! Points can be accumulated anywhere: at home, at the Y, at another location or outside.
Those who register will receive a fitness log to track progress. Those who log and finish the events within 40 days will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and be placed in a drawing for a $25 gift card of their choice.
“We wanted to provide something fun and different for the community to help keep them on track during the holiday season,” stated Julie Schaufelberger, Y wellness director. “Exercising relieves stress, gives you more energy and makes this hectic time of the year more manageable.
“Besides all that, it will give you true bragging rights to say you have actually completed a triathlon – even if it is a 40-day triathlon,” she concluded.
Information about this and other programs available at the Van Wert YMCA can be found by calling 419- 238-0443 or visiting www.vwymca.org. The YMCA of Van Wert County is partially funded by the Van Wert County Foundation and United Way.
