KALIDA — With the high school volleyball regular season coming to an end, the Leipsic Vikings and Kalida Wildcats were vying for the top spot in the Putnam County League Thursday night in Kalida.

Leipsic was coming off a 4-set loss to powerhouse McComb, while the Wildcats had dropped their last four matches.

The Vikings came in, took control early and rolled to a 25-9, 25-15, 25-8 3-set victory.

Leipsic got off to a 5-1 advantage and never trailed in the first set. The hosts got to within two at 5-3 on a Kylee Osterhage kill but the Vikings went on a 15-2 spurt later in the set to pull away for the win.

Amber Gerdeman and Emily Ellerbrock had a pair of aces in the set for the guests to help in the Vikings' effort.

Kalida got its first lead of the night in the second set as Alexis Decker delivered a pair of aces that put the home team up 3-2 but a Gerdeman kill and a pair of Kalida hitting errors quickly sent the impetus back the way of the guests.

The Vikings used a series of six serves by Ellerbrock to boost their lead to 19-12 later in the set. The visitors scored 11 of the last 13 points in the set to pull away for the 10-point win and a commanding 2-set lead.

Things were more of the same in set number three with the Lady Vikes grabbing the momentum early and never letting go. Recker scored the first point of the set for the Wildcats, making it a 3-1 deficit. A short time later, Carlee Miller sent across a kill to keep the score at 5-3.

However, the visitors continued to pound away and scored on four consecutive unforced errors by the home team that led by a 14-5 count. The visitors ended strong, going on a 11-3 run to finish off the contest.

Kalida hosts Columbus Grove Monday.
