Dr. Walter W. Wolery, 81, was honored Sunday with a paver in the entryway to the Delphos Museum of Postal History. Dr. Wolery has donated loose stamps, collections and books to the museum for all to enjoy. Museum Director Gary Levitt said Wolery was honored for his many contributions, not only to the museum but his dedication to the art of philately.
25 Years Ago – 1988
Several Putnam County artists and craftpersons will be among the artists scheduled to exhibit at Lima Art Association’s “Once Upon on Sunday”. Karen and Ken Meyer of Fort Jennings will display weaving in the fine art section. Cassie and Val Kiene of Columbus Grove will display herbs and loomed coverlets and Janet L. Kleman will display folk art and decorative items in the craft section.
Jane Heidlebaugh of Delphos, was recently chosen one of five finalists in the state who will compete for the Ohio Young Farmer’s Wife of the Year award. The Elida Young Farmers’ Wives member finds there are always plenty of jobs waiting to be done to help her husband, Harold, on their sheep farm on Peltier Road.
Dana Martin and Chuck Martin, both of Fort Jennings, were first and second in the Black Swamp Rifle and Pistol Club Wednesday’s pistol league. Gary Staup of Delphos took third place. Bob Martin of Delphos won the Thursday rimfire rifle matches. Bob Maloney of Delphos was second.
50 Years Ago – 1963
Mildred Clinger, Rosie Fetzer and Edna Kortokrax were named captains of the current Eagles Auxiliary membership drive at last Monday night’s meeting of the auxiliary held in the Eagles club rooms on North Main Street. Dodie Fetzer, the auxiliary’s membership chairman, made the appointments.
Herman J. Metzner of Chicago, brother of John Metzner, Sr., Emma Metzner and Rose Haigh of Delphos, was the recent subject of a feature article in the Centergram, a publication of U.S. Navy Public Works Center, Pearl Harbor. Metzner was known as the “daddy” of Shop 08 back in 1933-34. He supervised the construction of two-thirds of Pearl Harbor.
Jay-C-Dels met recently in Jaycee Hall with Mrs. Jerry Backus and Mrs. Jack Swick as hostesses. Preparations were made for the District III fall meeting to be Oct. 5 in Delphos at the Knights of Columbus club rooms. The next meeting will be Oct. 17 with Mrs. Art Utrup and Mrs. William Endres as co-hostesses.
75 Years Ago – 1938
A large number of members of Delphos Aerie of Eagles will meet Monday night to witness the second athletic show which will be staged after the regular meeting. Gil Lautzenheiser of Lima, will be trying for his second straight Delphos victory. He will meet “Smiley” Kaiser of Flint, Michigan.“Tiny” Morris of Elida, has been signed to officiate at the boxing and wrestling show.
The 40th anniversary of the dedication of the present Morris Chapel Church will be observed Sunday. The present edifice was dedicated in September, 1898. W. C. Scott, West Second Street, is the only surviving member of the board of trustees who served at the time the church was built.
Frank E. Mundy, prominent in Legion work, was elected at a regular meeting of Commemorative Post 268 Thursday night to succeed Ed. Murray as commander. Ferman Clinger was named first vice president and Clarence F. Heisterman second vice president. Plans were made at the meeting Thursday night for the annual Legion Stag Party which will be held at the Idlewild club house, east of Delphos, on Oct. 16.
