LIMA — Allen East had won the regular-season title in the Northwest Conference boys golf race and the Mustangs were looking to add the NWC Invitational title Thursday at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Lima.
Led by medalist Kayne Richardson’s 76, the Mustangs did so, compiling a 343 team score.
Teammate Lucas Herrmann’s 80 was tied for third medalist with Lincolnview freshman Joshah Rager.
Host Bluffton finished as the tournament runner-up with a 362, led by second medalist Rich Streicher and his 77.
The Lancers finished just behind the Pirates with a 363 as sophomore Derek Youtsey added an 87.
Lancer coach Daryl Dowdy shared co-Coach of the Year honors.
“The boys are having a great year,” Dowdy explained. “To go from last year’s finish of 3-13 (in the NWC) to this year’s finish of 13-3 says a lot about the hard work they have put in to improve. I am very proud of them!”
Paulding’s Brad Crawford carded an 88 to pace a fourth-place ending with a 368.
Jefferson came in fifth at 370 behind junior Ryan Bullinger’s 86 and junior Nick Fitch’s 89.
“Our top four scores are all underclassmen; they got their feet wet in an NWC Invitational and they will be back next year. We had four that earned honorable-mention all-NWC, which is a good sign,” Jefferson head man Chad Brinkman explained. “I am extremely pleased with how we did today. Today was the first 18-hole meet that Nick shot under a 90, so that is a big stepping-stone for him; it’s a great time for him to do so. Ryan led us with a 86. Both of those guys seem to have found their swings later in the year, a good time to do it. Freshman Evan Mox shot a 126 but this was his first varsity match; you can only get better.”
Brinkman did have one lament this day.
“Carter Mox (a junior) really struggled today; I felt he was 10 shots off where he should have been,” Brinkman added. “He’s been struggling lately but we’re confident he can turn it around; we know what he’s capable of doing. We have a lone senior, Tyler Rice, so I look forward to the rest of the season and the future.”
Spencerville put in a sixth-place finish with a 378 score, led by junior Chance Campbell’s 87 and James Schaad’s 88.
“I’m pretty happy with our effort today. I think the kids are a little disappointed that they didn’t golf better today but we finished fourth today,” Bearcat coach Mike Harmon noted. “James, our only senior, shot a couple of strokes better than his average and he ended up ninth as an individual. Our underclassmen played well today and I hope we can carry it over into the sectional next week.”
Seventh-place Crestview, with sophomore Connor Lautzenheiser shooting a 93 and senior Cain Lautzenheiser a 96, totaled 389.
“It was a beautiful day to be on the course,” Knight coach Jeremy Best observed. “I have been real pleased with the improvement in our kids this year! We bettered our team average by over 12 strokes from last year.”
Eighth-place Columbus Grove amassed a 416, with junior Brandon Hoffman shooting a 95 and sophomore Logan Diller a 98.
Ada, with Player of the Year Slade Downing registering a 93, was last in the 9-team format with a 424.
Grove is in the Sycamore Springs Invitational Saturday before hosting in the Putnam County League Invitational starting at noon Monday at Country Acres Golf Course.
Crestview hosts Wapakoneta Monday.
Jefferson and Lincolnview are in Division III sectional action Thursday at Auglaize Golf Course; Spencerville is at the Hawthorne Hills sectional.
