ST. HENRY — Two high schools with a strong football tradition met on the gridiron Friday evening in St. Henry.

Delphos St. John’s and the host Redskins both own a total of 12 state football titles, each squad with six each. But this year, neither team has yet to record a victory as they entered league play in the tough Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Blue Jays got their first win with a 38-20 victory.

After St. Henry won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, Tyler Jettinghoff returned the opening kick to the 36 yard line. Quarterback Nick Martz optioned to the 46 was good for a first down. Martz then completed a pass to Andy May which was good for another first down. After a Luke MacLennan run and a Martz scramble, MacLennan ran the ball to the St. Henry 9 for a first down. Offsides against St. Henry made it first and goal at the 4. Jettinghoff scored with a 4-yard run and Ben Wrasman’s extra point made it 7-0 with 6:48 left in the first quarter.

St. Henry didn’t waste any time, scoring on the first offensive play with a 73-yard strike from Stammen to Jeff Paul. The extra point failed with a bad snap.

Jettinghoff returned the kickoff to the 43 yard line. Four good runs by Jettinghoff resulted in three first downs to the Redskin 6. The Blue Jay drive was stopped and Wrasman’s 27-yard field goal made it 10-6 with 2:17 left in the first quarter.

The Redskins then scored on a 4-yard sweep by Jesse Niekamp early in the second quarter. Sherman’s extra point put the hosts in front 13-10.

Fullback Luke MacLennan got in on the scoring with a 14-yard run with 8:08 left in the half. Wrasman’s P.A.T was good for a 17-13 DSJ lead.

A good kickoff return by St. Henry started their next drive at the 41 yard line. A pass to Paul drove the Redskins to the 35. Runs by Niekamp set up a fourth and one at the 10 yard line. The Blue Jay defense stepped up, stopping fullback Jordan Osterholt for a loss on the run.

St. John’s kicked off to open the second half with St. Henry starting at their own 30 yard line. An attempted reverse play by the Redskins resulted in a fumble. Linebacker Austin Heiing broke through the line for the recovery at the 21 yard line of St. Henry. After a pair of incomplete passes by Martz, St. Henry was called for pass interference at the 12 yard line resulting in fourth down and 3. Jettinghoff ran 12 yards to paydirt and Wrasman made the score 24-13 with 9:55 to play in the third.

The Blue Jay defense held the Redskins again and got the ball back at the St. Henry 43. MacLennan reeled off an 18-yard run down to the 39. After a couple of plays, Jettinghoff took off on a 28-yard scoring run and a 31-13 lead.

St. Henry’s next possession of the second half ended with a bad snap over the head of the punter; he gained control of the football in the end zone and got off a short punt. Heiing returned it to the 2 yard line and Jettinghoff scored on the next play for a 38-13 lead.

The Redskins scored with 8:44 left in the game but could not get any closer than the final score of 38-20.

St. John’s Head Coach Todd Schulte thought his team finally had a good effort for four quarters.

“Turnovers were the key to the game and we took advantage,” he added.

Next action for the Blue Jays is Friday night against Coldwater at home, while St. Henry will play Minster.
