DELPHOS — The Delphos Jefferson Wildcats opened the 2013 high school football season Friday night at Stadium Park against the Tigers from Waynesfield-Goshen. Both teams came out a little sluggish, with Jefferson fumbling the ball on their first drive and Waynesfield driving slowly and methodically down the field after the recovery. However, the Wildcats’ defense held strong inside their own 10, forcing the Tigers to settle for a 23-yard field goal.

“I was very pleased with our intensity in the first quarter,” commented Tiger coach Doug Foley. “We were able to mix the run and pass and move the football effectively. Unfortunately, our young team fatigued quickly and we were no match for the experience of Delphos Jefferson.”

After the W-G score, Tyler Mox fielded the ensuing kickoff at his 11 yard line and took the ball 89 yards down the right sideline for a Jefferson TD. Though off to a slow start, the ‘Cats ended the first quarter with a 7-3 lead on their way to a 48-3 romp.

Fueled by the momentum gained from the end of the first stanza, the Wildcats stuffed the Tigers and forced a 3-and-out. Jefferson made quick work of their possession and scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Ross Thompson (3 receptions for 80 yds, 3 TDs) from quarterback Austin Jettinghoff (7-8 passing, 4 TDs) in the right corner of the end zone for a 14-3 lead.

Kurt Wollenhaupt’s kickoff was bobbled and fielded deep in Tiger territory at the 5 yard line. Another 3-and-out by the Jeffcat defense forced a short punt by Lake Turner of Waynesfield. On the first play of the drive, Jettinghoff hit tight end Thompson for another touchdown - this one from 31 yards out — and the rout was on. The extra point by Wollenhaupt gave Delphos a 21-3 lead half way through the second quarter.

Jefferson continued the onslaught, adding two more stops, one on an interception and a 53-yard return by corner Tyler Mox.

The Wildcats extended their lead with two more touchdowns consisting of a 2-yard run by Zavier Buzard (10 rushes for 114 yards) and Thompson’s third touchdown reception of the first half - this one a 12-yard catch.

Delphos ended the half on a strong note and went into the locker room with a commanding 34-3 lead over the Tigers.

“I was pleased with our offensive line as the game wore on. We were able to move the ball on the ground and in the air effectively. Our skill players made some big plays but a lot of the credit goes to the men up front,” a pleased Jefferson Head Coach Bub Lindeman noted.

The Wildcats came out of the break and picked up right where they left off, capping off their first drive with a 63-yard touchdown carry by Thompson (2 carries for 74 yards). The extra point by Wollenhaupt sailed right through the middle of the uprights, giving the ‘Cats an insurmountable 41-3 lead.

Waynesfield’s first possession of the second half ended in yet another 3-and-out. Jettinghoff’s touchdown pass to Buzard from 16 yards out added to the Wildcats’ lead and final victory margin.

The Tigers continued to struggle moving the ball and had to punt yet again to the Jefferson 48 yard line. Delphos ended the third quarter with their subs in the game and entered the final period with a 48-3 lead over Waynesfield.

The fourth quarter, cut down to six minutes by mutual agreement, consisted of Jefferson’s reserves finishing out the game.

“There were a lot of positives for an opening game,” remarked Coach Lindeman. “We were able to play a lot of players and get real game experience. I thought we gained with more confidence as the game wore on. We definitely need to shore up the penalty situation (11 for 115 yards); it’s a facet that can separate the mediocre teams from the good ones. We’ll get back to work this week and be ready to open Northwest Conference play at Paulding next Friday.”

While the Wildcats are on the road for the first time this season, Waynesfield-Goshen will host Ft. Recovery in non-league action.
