One Year Ago


The annual St. Anthony parish festival will be held Aug. 4-5 in Columbus Grove. This year, the grand prize is a 2012 Chevy Cruze valued at $20,000. Saturday night’s activities include pork chop and chicken BBQ dinners and a 5K race. Sunday’s activities include duck races, a basketball tournament, raffle drawings and much more.


25 Years Ago – 1988


In charge of trophies for the Delphos Area Car Club ’88 show are Ralph Nolte, Jerry Picker and Byron Buettner. Sixty-eight trophies will be awarded at the show to be held Saturday at Jefferson Senior high School and Training Center. The weekend event will begin with “Cruise Nite” 7-10 p.m. Friday on the canal parking lot.


Hymn-singing members of Christian Heritage Fellowship International Inc. were present Tuesday evening at the site of their new church on State Route 309 east of Delphos. Removing the first shovelful of dirt was Pastor Dan DeWitt.


Middle Point firefighters will be holding their annual picnic starting at 4 p.m. July 30 in uptown Middle Point. Festivities will include chicken barbecue, sandwiches, beverages and games. Dave Kill and the Good Ole Boys will entertain 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.


50 Years Ago – 1963


Mike Schlereth, veteran marshal and more recently assistant fire chief was honored Saturday evening by members of the Middle Point Volunteer Fire Department and their wives. Mike, who operated a village blacksmith shop in Middle Point, has been forced to retire because of his health. He is now living with his son, Floyd, in Delphos.


Winners in the stag day golf event held recently at the Delphos Country Club have been announced by the golfing committee. Elvin (Dick) Patton placed first in the golf event and Clete Myers of Delphos and Bud Miller of Ottoville were the respective winners in the No. 2 and No. 7 greens contest. The attendance award went to Mack Endsley.


Eight candidates for the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary were initiated into the organization Monday night. Special awards were presented to Rita Miller, Lola McGue and Margaret Krugh. Hostesses for the next meeting will be Leona Pohlman, chairman, Charlotte Hall, Katherine Powell, Lois Meeker and Eleanor Mueller.


75 Years Ago – 1938


A meeting of the Delphos Civic Club was held Thursday evening at the Idlewild club house, east of Delphos. Leo Odenweller, Henry Imholt and William B. Gladen were named members of a committee to assist in planning a celebration for the opening of new Route 30-S. The Civic Club committee will meet with the Kiwanis club committee and consult with a Lima committee regarding the program.


The Swanton baseball team, at present holding second place in the Class AA Federation League of Toledo, will travel to Fort Jennings Sunday afternoon for a game with the Jennings aggregation. Len Swick, Fay Meekins, Mel Westrich, and Raymond Ditto, all of Delphos, are on the roster of the Fort Jennings team.


Notices are being sent out regarding the 44th annual meeting of the Elida Pioneer Society which will be held in Crites Grove, one mile east of Elida on Aug. 11. A large number of Delphos people plan to be in attendance. The invitations are signed by William Klinger, president; A. J. Sherrick, secretary and Abner Brenneman, assistant secretary.
