Local Special Olympians travel to games PDF Print E-mail

Van Wert County Special Olympic athletes traveled to Columbus to the Ohio State University campus to participate in the 2013 Summer Games. The events held over the weekend were track and field events, softball throw and bocce ball. The highlight of the weekend was Friday night and Saturday, when athletes got to visit “Tent Town” where local service organizations hosted various carnival type games for the athletes to play …. win, lose or draw everyone won a prize!

Track and Field events took place at the Jesse Owens Track Stadium. Saturday Jason Etzler got a fourth place ribbon in the mini javelin throw while Miranda Fleming got a silver medal. In the women’s 100 meter dash Amber Young, Meghan Bell and Miranda Fleming received silver medals; Jeannnie Miller and Rachel Chivington won bronze and Sharon Mosier a fourth place ribbon.

Sunday continued with 100 meter dash competition for men with Rhyan Gent bringing home the gold and Jason Etzler winning fourth place. In the softball competition Rhyan Gent, Amber Young and Rachel Chivington all won the gold; Jeannie Miller and Meghan Bell the bronze; Sharon Mosier fourth place ribbon.

The bocce ball competition was held Friday afternoon and again Saturday. The team of JP Cox and Michele Lichtle won the 4th place ribbon. The athletes and coaches wish to thank all the local support received through private donations, the Van Wert County Foundation and the Moose. These special athletes represented Van Wert County with pride and athletic excellence.
