VAN WERT — One game was a wild slugfest that featured a big rally that fell short.
The other featured a pitching gem by a left-hander.
In the end Friday afternoon/evening at Russell Fisher Field at Smiley Park in Van Wert, Jefferson and Crestview clinched berths in the ACME Summer Baseball District Tournament: the Wildcats outlasted the Van Wert Cougars 12-10 and the Knights rode a dominating complete-game performance by Damian Helm to oust the Cougars 12-0 in the nightcap.
The Wildcats and Knights will battle 11 a.m. today; if the Knights win, they will play a second game after a brief break for seeding purposes into the Minster District starting Wednesday.
The Cougars got it rolling in the top of the first (Jefferson was home team due to a coin flip) against Wildcat starter Brandon Herron. Caleb Jenkins led off with a walk but was cut down on Joe Lisa’s failed sacrifice bunt try. However, he scored as Brandt Henry tripled to deep left center and in turn, he scored courtesy of Tyler Williams and his knock to right for a 2-0 edge.
The Wildcats — who took advantage of seven Cougar miscues to register nine unearned runs — answered with five in the home half against southpaw starter Henry (complete game, 12 hits, 12 runs, 6 free passes, 6 strikeouts; 137 pitches, 84 strikes). With two down, Austin Jettinghoff got aboard on an infield hit. Zavier Buzard walked and Jake Pulford’s knock to center plated Jettinghoff. Hunter Binkley’s grounder was throw away, scoring Buzard and putting runners on the corners. Pulford scored on Herron’s liner to right. Tyler Talboom walked to load the bases and Ryan Bullinger also walked to get Binkley home for a 4-2 edge. Josh Teman then walked to get Herron home for a 5-2 edge.
Jefferson made it 10-2 in the home second by sending 11 more to the dish. Jettinghoff led off with a doubled to left and scored on a one-out rip to right center by Pulford. Pinch-runner Damien Dudgeon advanced on Binkley’s single and scored on Herron’s chop single into left. After Binkley burgled third, he scored as Talboom’s grounder was booted. Talboom was forced at second by Bullinger and Teman walked to load the sacks. A misplayed grounder off Jace Stockwell’s bat got Herron in and a misplayed grounder hit by Jettinghoff plated Bullinger for a 10-2 edge.
The Cougars ended an eight-out streak with one down in the fourth on a misplayed grounder hit by Kevin Agler.
Jefferson made it 11-2 in the home half on a leadoff walk (Talboom), a Bullinger sacrifice and an infield single by Teman; an error on the play allowed the run to score.
Van Wert began to rally in earnest in the visitor fifth. With one down, Brian Mills doubled to right and Jenkins singled to put runners on the corners. Lisa scored Mills on a grounder and was safe on an error, putting runners on the corners. He swiped second and Henry followed with a bases-loading walk. Williams singled to right to plate Jenkins and finished Herron (for Jettinghoff). Agler forced Williams but plated Lisa for an 11-5 deficit. Ethan Williams singled to left to score Henry and T. Williams was safe on a wild pitch (strike three in the dirt) to load the bases. A wild pitch got Agler home for an 11-7 deficit.
The visitors got within 11-10 in the sixth. Jenkins walked, as did Lisa. A wild pitch moved them both up and an out later, T. Williams blooped a hit to center to get Jenkins home. Williams stole second and Agler walked to juice the sacks. E. Williams launched a two-run hit to left (Lisa and T. Williams) to make it 11-10 and finish Jettinghoff (for Binkley, who earned the save). An out later, Gavin Cross singled to load the bases but the Cougars left the bases loaded (10 for the game).
Jefferson added a big tally in the sixth. With one out, Teman singled but was eliminated on a Stockwell grounder; an error allowed the batter to reach second. Jettinghoff ripped a run-scoring single to center to make it 12-10.
Jenkins started the Van Wert seventh with a walk but was forced out by a Lisa grounder. An out later, T. Williams was safe on an error but Agler lined out hard to centerfielder Buzard to the end the first game.
That left the Cougars to get ready for the Knights about 20 minutes later.
Helm was way too much in his 11-strikeout, two-hit performance (90 pitches, 73 for strikes). The only Cougs to get on board were T. Williams on a two-out error in the bottom of the first, Williams on a one-out knock to right in the fourth and Agler on a one-out double down the right-field line in the home seventh.
The Knights left Helm on after a two-out double in the first against Cougar starter T. Williams.
In their second, they scored twice. Bryce Richardson singled to commence it but was forced out by Jordan Roop. He stole second and advanced to third on an infield hit by Adrian Camp. After Camp was caught stealing second. Brock Rolsten walked and Jake Lippi looped a hit to ;eft to score Roop. Cam Etzler singled to center to score Rolsten.
In the Crestview fourth, they made it 3-0 on a leadoff walk (Roop), a bunt by Camp, back-to-back free passes (Rolsten and Lippi) that finished T. Williams (for Agler) and a sacrifice fly to center by Etzler.
They made it 5-0 in the fifth. Helm’s hit started it on an error on a Nate Owens grounder put two runners on. A wild pitch advanced both and an out later, both touched the dish on a two-run lash to left by Roop.
The Knights made it 9-0 in the sixth. Etzler singled and stole second; he advanced on Mitch Rickard’s knock to center and Helm walked to load the bases. Owens flied to right to score Etzler and put runners on the corners. An error on a Richardson grounder scored Rickard for a 7-0 edge and finished Agler (by Evan Williams). A wild pitch put Helm at third and Richardson at second, with they scored on an infield single by Camp, with a hustling Richardson scoring from second.
Crestview put the finishing touches on with a three-run seventh. With one down, Etzler beat out an infield hit, burgled second and, after Rickard walked, scored on a double to right by Helm. Owens plated Rickard with a single and after a fly-out and a walk to Elliott Callow, Camp forced Helm across the plate with a bases-loaded walk.
