DELPHOS — Parkway put together a four-run sixth inning to rally past host St. John’s 9-5 in Midwest Athletic Conference baseball action on a breezy Tuesday afternoon at Stadium Park.

The Blue Jays (5-12, 2-4 MAC) had led the whole way until the sixth. With the Panthers (13-8 3-2 MAC) down 5-4, the Panthers pieced together two hit batters, a walk, two hits — including a 2-run liner to center by Tanner Bates (3-for-5, 2 runs batted) that plated Cameron Roehm and Kane Pontsler — a sacrifice fly by Austin Adams (Cody Depweg) and a wild pitch that scored Jordan Stephenson. The Panthers now led 8-5 after chasing starter T.J. Hoersten (for Andrew Metzger).

That uprising gave Stephenson all the support he needed in finishing his complete game (7 innings, 9 hits, 5 runs, 2 earned, 1 strikeout, 1 walk).

The Jays did get runners at second (Curtis Geise) and third (Ben Wrasman, 3-for-3) with one down in the home half but couldn’t get them in.

The Panthers made it 9-5 in the top of the seventh on a hit, a force-out, a hit batter and two wild pitches, scoring Stephenson. They left the bases loaded.

Metzger led off the Jays’ seventh with a single but was forced out by Hoersten and the last two batters were retired.

“We played well for four or five innings but then we made some mental mistakes in the field. That is our problem lately; we don’t make physical mistakes but mental ones,” Jays coach Ryan Warnecke said. “Part of it is that we go through the motions in warm-up and it carries over into games. Offensively, I felt we hit the ball well, especially early, but then you go back and we had a lot of pop-ups. We aren’t driving the ball, so we have to go back to the basics.” The Jays got off to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single by Geise, a stolen base and a 2-out misplayed grounder by Metzger.

The Panthers tied it at 1 in the second on consecutive singles by Brandon Moorman (2-for-4), Jack Roth (2-for-4) and O’Neill (2-for-3, 2 RBIs).

The Jays made it 3-1 in the second on three hits, including Wrasman’s run-scoring single to center that plated Clay Courtney; and three errors, one on Wrasman’s hit that allowed Drew Wagner to score.

The hosts made it 4-1 in the third on Metzger’s 1-out liner to left, a stolen base, a bounceout by Hoersten and a Courtney RBI knock to center.

The Panthers moved within 4-2 in the fourth on a leadoff double by Roth; an error putting him at third and he scored as O’Neill flied out to left.

St. John’s put the score at 5-2 in the fourth. Craig Klausing led off with a walk and Wrasman singled to left; an error allowed both runners to advance and Klausing scored as Geise flied out to center.

Parkway got within 5-4 in the fifth on three singles, an RBI double-play groundout by Adams (Pontsler) and a wild pitch (Depweg), setting up the rally.

“We didn’t help Jordan in the field today but he is a bulldog; he doesn’t let anything bother him. He generally doesn’t walk many but I felt he was a little higher in the zone than normal,” Parkway mentor Mike Schumm explained. “Part of that was how hard St. John’s hit the ball today; he was not as effective as he usually is because of that. For us, we’ve been able to hit the ball well most of the year and we kept hitting today.”

St. John’s is at LCC today (makeup game); Parkway hosts Coldwater.
