One Year Ago

St. John’s held its annual benefit auction Saturday with nearly 300 in attendance. The evening’s theme was “Cinco de Mayo.” The benefit helps keep student tuition as low as possible. Winners in the big ticket drawing were Rick and Deb Reindel, Bob and Grace Schulte, Arnie and Helen Fischer, Matt Conley, Ted and Clara Hanf, Joe and Doris Bockey and Scott and Chrissy Elwer.

25 Years Ago – 1988

Mayor Harold Wieging has designated May 20-21 as Poppy Days for American Legion Auxiliary and May 27-28 as Buddy Poppy Days for Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Presenting Wieging with the first poppies were Mary King, poppy chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary; and Mary Hageman, poppy chairman for VFW Auxiliary.

Lincolnview senior, Stacia Renee Sheets, was one of the winners of the Werner Becher Scholarship for 1988. Sheets is the daughter of David and Sharon Sheets of Van Wert. She has been active in 4-H and school and church programs. Julie Koehlinger, Parkway senior, was the other winner of the scholarship. The scholarship is given to two outstanding 4-H members in memory of former Van Wert County Extension Agent, Werner Becher.

Catcher Roger Klenz scored the tying run in the seventh inning and belted in the winning run with a double in the ninth as Jefferson beat Bluffton 12-11 at Jefferson Senior High School. Leading hitters for Jefferson were Mike Closson, 2-for-5, Sam Miller, 3-for-5, Jason Clevenger, 2-for-4, Rusty Thompson, 2-for-3, Klenz, 2-for-4, and Ryan Sakemiller, 3-for-4.

50 Years Ago – 1963

Sandy Stallkamp, one of the two Delphos girls who participated in the National Baton Twirling contest held Saturday at Lima, placed fourth and received a trophy for her high score. This was her second contest. Sharon Schleeter placed sixth in her age division and gave an equally good performance.

Mothers Night was observed by members of Phi Delta Sorority Monday evening as the group met at the Delphos Public Library. The program consisted of talks by Margaret Cauble and Pauline Wrocklage and a conducted tour of the library. A dessert smorgasbord was served following the tour. Door prizes were awarded to Mrs. William Brickner and Mrs. Ralph Craig.

Mrs. William Wiesenberg was named president of the Green Thumb Garden Club during a luncheon meeting held Monday at NuMaude’s Restaurant. Following the business session Mrs. Wiesenberg introduced Mrs. E. L. Staup, who gave a most informative and interesting talk on flower arrangement, designs including bulb flowers.

75 Years Ago – 1933

M. J. “Didd” Lehmann has taken over the Delphos Beer Distributing Company which was formerly conducted by his father, C. F. Lehmann. He has taken out a state license for the distribution of beer in Delphos and the vicinity and is planning to conduct the business as in the past. Headquarters will continue to be at the same location at the rear of Lehmann’s Music Store at 212 N. Main St.

Thirteen students of the Landeck School will receive their diplomas at graduation exercises to be held in the school auditorium in Landeck on June 5. Graduates are Francis Fisher, George Wienken, Ellen Pothast, George Kill, Alice Kill, Rosemary Mueller, Beatrice Hotz, George Bohnlein, Joseph Miller, Angela Kill, Angelene Kill, Romano Rahrig, Virginia Rahrig, Theodore Rode and Rovena Schwinnen.

The Ohio State University baseball team stopped for a short time in Delphos Thursday afternoon enroute to Chicago to Columbus. The team is scheduled to play Northwestern University Friday and Saturday afternoon at Chicago. Richard Wulfhorst of Delphos, regular catcher on the Ohio State team, was with the group.
