St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church parishioners attended Ash Wednesday Mass this morning and received the mark of the ashes. The ashes are made from the burning of the blessed palms distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday. They are sprinkled with holy water before being applied to the forehead in the sign of a cross with the minister’s right thumb. Today marks the beginning of the Lenten season.
