DELPHOS—This is the 11th year for the Delphos Relay For Life, which is an 18 hour organized overnight community-based walking and running fundraising event. The relay will begin at 6 p.m. and take place at the Arnold Scott Memorial Track at Jefferson Senior High School in Delphos.
The history of the event started in May 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer.
Chairperson Cindy Metzger explained that the event is a year-round project and describes the relay as a “day in the life of a cancer patient.
