DELPHOS — Second-year Jefferson head boys basketball coach Jordan Jettinghoff wanted his team to get off to a fast start Saturday night against Fairview.

Consider it done.

The Wildcats — opening the 2017-18 campaign — outscored the Apaches (0-2) 26-9 in the opening eight minutes en route to a 64-44 victory at The Stage of Jefferson Middle School.

The Wildcats did it by shooting 10-of-14 in the span — including 4-of-5 downtown — and 24-of-36 overall for 66.7 percent. In that was a 7-of-12 night beyond the 3-point arc (58.3%).

“We preached all week to the kids about getting off quickly, especially since Fairview already would have a game in. Our start is exactly what we needed,” Jettinghoff commented. “Rode and the other veteran seniors: TBratt (Tyler Bratton), Davion (Tyson) and Brenen (Auer); set the tone for us early. We struggled offensively the second quarter because we stopped going inside and using our advantage in there. We focused on that at the half and started to go there again the second half. Our defense had a bit of a letdown in the third period but we got back to playing well there in the fourth. It was a good opener for us and it’s nice to start with a win but we have a long way to go.”

Rode, who led the scoring with 21, dropped in 12 in the opening period alone to get the red-and-white off to a strong start. He dropped in the first seven right from the get-go and then got plenty of help from his friends, with Bratton knocking down six to aid the cause. When he hit the 2nd-of-2 foul shots with 1.7 seconds to go, that lead was 26-9.

Alas for the hosts, they could not maintain that scoring trend into the second period. After committing one miscue in the opener, they turned it over six times in the second — as did the Apaches. Thus, the scoring pace was affected, with the units combining for 6-of-12 shooting. When Hunter Haehn laid one in off a turnover with :23 showing, the Wildcats’ halftime lead was 34-16.

Fairview made a run in the third period, chipping at the deficit until a pair of free shots by Caleb Frank at the 4:24 mark reduced the Jefferson margin to 36-29. That was as close as it would get the rest of the way. The Wildcats slowly rebuilt the lead to 46-34 on a Rode layin at 18 seconds.

The Wildcat advantage fluctuated between 12 and 22 before the Wildcat bench emptied toward the end of the contest.

In the junior varsity clash, the Wildcats grabbed a 29-24 victory.

The Wildcats host Fort Recovery Friday, with JV start at 6 p.m.
