PENHOOK, Virginia — After a long battle with multiple myeloma, Sara B. Ruona of Penhook, Virginia, passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017.

Mrs. Ruona was born on Nov. 25, 1941, in Van Wert.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Lloyd of the home; her sister, Marilyn Weaver of Sun City, AZ; brother-in-law, Marion Jettinghoff of Delphos, Ohio; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews and their children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alba and Flossie Hunt Burgess; and her sisters, Dorothy McCalla and Marguerite Jettinghoff.

Ruona was a lifelong learner. She had three college degrees. She worked as a Librarian in both public and college environments and then as a Registered Nurse in hospitals and public settings.

She and her husband retired to Smith Mountain Lake, where they replaced their “Fisherman’s Cottage” with a permanent home and lived happily for 15 years.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta, Virginia. Her ashes will be placed in the Columbarium after the service. A reception will follow after the service.
