17 September 1860 Port of Baltimore

Baltimore, Maryland

Thru the narrow and steep passageway down between the hatches, Maria Francisca Ruen climbed down to the between-deck using the ladders. On both sides two tiers of bunks have been put up from stem to stern. On each bunk, which is marked with its particular number, there is a place for five. Her fellow passenger and bunk-mate Friderica Elisabeth Hoenerbaum glanced up at her. Maria Francisca had been on deck during a lull in the heavy rain to catch a glimpse of the Baltimore skyline as the steam tug “Hector” towed the bark “Maryland” to her dock. Soon she, her uncle, Wilhelm Ruen, Friderica, along with Anton Wieging would begin their journey to Cincinnati. She hoped it would be a new beginning for her, with her leaving the stain of illegitimacy behind.

Maria Francisca Ruen was born illegitimate on 24 May 1838 in Borken, Nordrein-Westfalen, Germany, to Wilhelmine Ruen. On 7 January 1862, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, she married Anton Wieging, born 8 May 1832 in Kockelwick, Borken, Nordrein-Westfalen, Germany, to Johan Heinrich and Johanna (Geling) Wieging.
