Wrestlers tune up at LCC invite

LIMA — The Lima Central Catholic Wrestling Invitational has become quite a later-in-the-season event.
This year, 34 teams showed up to get an idea of where they stand just two weeks before conference meets.
St. John’s finished fourth to Mechanicsburg, Clinton-Massie and Blanchester in the 2-day meet.
Head coach Derek Sterling was pleased with where his team is right now.
“We brought 13 wrestlers here this weekend: four freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and one senior. We were sitting in first place at the end of the first day; going into the finals, we were in fourth place as a team and that is were we finished for the tournament,” he relayed. “We had three wrestlers in the finals and all three won their matches. Aaron Merschman was a force here this weekend and he knocked off the #1 and #2 seeds in the tournament and the #1 seed kept Aaron from going to state last year; he beat Aaron 3-2 last year for the go-to-state match and Aaron beat him here 4-3. Joey Grubenhoff, our 215-pounder, beat a state qualifier to take third today. Brian Merschman, who is a 3-time state qualifier, also took third for us today. The rest of the team helped us out a lot this weekend, who got us a lot of pins and wins to get us to a fourth-place finish out 34 teams.”
The Jays’ record in dual meets is 4-1 and they wrestle next at home Wednesday with Allen East at 5 p.m.
Spencerville ended up 15th.
“We expected Tyler Obringer at 285 pounds to win the whole thing. He wrestled the last match of the night where he pinned his opponent in the second period,” Bearcat mentor Tom Wegesin observed. “His wins this year are all by pins with only one loss. He is just dominating the weight class this year. I had one lose in the round right before the final. We took 15th in a 34-team tournament with a young team, so I will take that.”
The Bearcat record is 4-6 in duals and they pay a visit to St. John’s Feb. 9.
Columbus Grove was tied for 18th.
“We started really good and got quite a few pins in the first round. We went downhill a little bit after that and had six boys left for today,” head coach Eric “Ernie” Siefker commented. “We did get banged up some this weekend and as a result, we have a couple of kids who have to sit out next week. We had two boys just miss the finals by one match and 189-pounder Corey Brinkman took fourth place. This tournament gives us an idea about the tournament with some of these same kids being seen in sectionals, district and possibly state.”
The Bulldogs are 7-2 in duals for the season and host a quad on Tuesday.
Lincolnview ended up 32nd.
