FORT JENNINGS — The Crestview Knights got the ball with just 30 ticks remaining in Tuesday’s non-league boys cage game at The Fort trailing 42-40 against the Fort Jennings Musketeers.
They utilized nearly every second of it as junior Brad Miller (12 points) canned a trifecta to put the visiting Knights up by one with just 1.2 seconds to go and the inbounds from Jennings provided no Christmas Miracle as they fell to the Knights 43-42.
Fort Jennings came out shooting the ball hot in the first quarter as they shot 6-of-7 from the field and grabbed an early 14-12 lead on the Knights. Fort Jennings started off the game with a small 7-2 run but the Knights answered right back with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 8-7 edge. The hosts answered that with its run to take a 2-point lead after one.
Leading the Musketeers in the period were Jared Horstman (16 markers, 9 boards) with four points, while Trevor Von Sossan (10 counters) and Drew Mesker added three apiece for the hosts. The Knights of Crestview were led by Rob Cook and Steven Richard with three apiece.
“I’m very happy with the way we played tonight and the effort from our players,” said Crestview’s head man, Jeremy Best.
The second quarter was a lot like the first; a back and fourth battle as the Musketeers went into the half with a 23-19 lead over the Knights.
Jeremy Kohli (4 assists) notched seven points in the quarter to guide the Musketeers. Crestview was led by Rob Cook with seven points.
The third quarter was once again a hard-fought quarter between the two teams as Fort Jennings squeaked it out by the slimmest of margins, 14-13, putting them up going into the final period 37-32.
Rob Cook (8 boards) had eight more points in the quarter for the Knights and led all scorers with 17 on the evening.
“I think that we played very well defensively tonight. We had some breakdowns throughout the game but overall played well,” added Best.
Jennings had its biggest lead off the night in the early part of the fourth quarter as they lead 39-32 but quickly saw that evaporate as Crestview came right back, making it a 42-38 game with just a minute remaining. Miller stole the ball away and took it to the hole but was fouled. He made both shots from the line, making it 42-40. Crestview’s next possession was a wild one. Steven Richard first missed a 3; Cook grabbed the offensive rebound but missed the putback. Jennings rebounded it but the ball touched the out-of-bounds line and it was a jump ball to the Knights. That is when Miller got points number 8, 9 and 10; his 3-ball hit every part of the rim and then fell in making the Knights victorious.
Crestview connected on 18-of-48 shots (3-of-19 3-balls) for 37 percent and 4-of-5 free throws (80%). They grabbed 17 rebounds. Crestview hosts St. John’s Tuesday.
Fort Jennings (3-3) downed 17-of-36 fielders (1-of-6 triples) for 47 percent and 7-of-13 from the line (53%). They owned 24 caroms and visit Lincolnview Tuesday.
It was a double dip win for the Knights as they won the JV contest by a score of 60-15. Leading the Knights was Trevor Roop with 17.
