Bulldog boys grab league rout over ’Riders

ELIDA — The Elida Bulldogs boys basketball team played host to Western Buckeye League rival St. Marys Roughriders Friday night at the Union Bank Court at the Elida Fieldhouse.
They were right at home as they pummeled the Roughriders by a final score of 62-34 to open the league campaign.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 WBL) was sophomore guard Reggie McAdams (4 assists, 4 steals); he started off slow but ended the game strong with an 18-point performance.
For the visiting ’Riders, they were led by freshman guard Garret Fledderjohann and junior Derek Roop as they had 12 points apiece.
Both St. Marys Memorial and Elida struggled to score in the first period; the score going into the second was 6-4 in favor of the Roughriders.
The second quarter was when Elida made its move on the ’Riders. They dominated the span by outscoring the Roughriders (0-3, 0-1 WBL) 24-11.
Leading the charge was senior guard Matt Thompson with eight points, including two 3-balls. McAdams chipped in six as Elida took a big lead — 28-17 — into the half.
McAdams and Thompson had eight apiece in the first half. Elida shot 8/11 in the second period after shooting just 2/14 in the first quarter (22/50 for the game, 6/21 3s, for 44%).
“We had a rough first quarter but our defense stepped up and played well tonight and was able to Limit them in scoring. McAdams and Thompson struggled early on but ended the night solid,” said Elida coach Denny Thompson.
Elida’s second half was just as solid as their second quarter as they outscored the Riders in the second 16 minutes by 21 points, 34-17.
“Defense was solid in the first quarter as we made Elida shoot just 2/14 in that quarter. Elida is a very solid team and I think that we competed well in the first half and throughout the game,” said St. Marys head coach, Dan Hegemier.
The Roughriders went into the final stanza down by a score of 41-26.
Matt Thompson ended the game for Elida with a 14-point performance, second to just McAdams.
In the junior varsity contest, the Bulldogs fell to the Roughriders by a 44-39. Leading the’ Riders was Paul Cremeau with 11 points. Topping Elida were Aric Thompson with 13 and Mike McDonald with 12.
Elida outrebounded St. Marys 37-20 (16-6 offensive) as Michael Knotts had nine and Desmond Ragin eight. Todd Kraft added four assists of the team’s total of 13. They added 13 fouls and 13 turnovers. Elida will take on Lima Senior on Dec. 29 at Lima Senior.
St. Marys was a cold 11/33 from the floor (1/9 3s) for 33 percent. They totaled 17 fouls and 15 turnovers. They will take on Coldwater tonight. JV tip is at 6 p.m.
