FORT JENNINGS — The Fort Jennings girls basketball team took on Putnam County League foe, the Leipsic Vikings, Tuesday night at “The Fort” of Ft. Jennings High School.
Both teams made runs in the ballgame but after it was all said and done, the Lady Musketeers were able to get their first conference win, beating the Vikings 53-47.
The Musketeers were tied with Leipsic going into the fourth quarter of action and momentum on their side. The Musketeers’ defense got them a lot of turnovers and led to some easy buckets down the stretch.
Katie Von Lehmden led the Lady Musketeers with 19 points on the night, including some late buckets in the fourth quarter to get her team the hard-fought victory.
The visitors were able to get the early lead after the first quarter of play, leading the Musketeers 14-12 after the first 8 minutes of play.
The Vikings were led by sophomore Emily Gerten, who tallied up 16 points on the night.
The Vikings led 25-23 going into halftime and had all of the momentum on their side.
Musketeer coach Matt Myerholtz was very pleased with the way his team fought back late in the game and got the well-deserved victory.
“It’s been two years since we’ve won a league game and it’s great to finally win one this year and even better this being our first league game of the season,” Myerholtz remarked.
The Musketeers fought back in the third quarter of play and outscored the visitors 15-13, tying up the game heading into the final quarter of action. Junior Taylor Wallenhorst tallied up 12 points in the Musketeers’ win and was a key factor in the home team’s comeback. The Musketeers stayed out of foul trouble Tuesday night but still played aggressive defense and created turnovers.
“We were not very sharp tonight coming out of the gate but we were able to pick things up in the second half defensively and were able to hit some big shots down the stretch to pull out the victory,” Myerholtz added.
With the win, the Musketeers go to 6-1 (1-0 PCL) on the year and will travel to Kalida to take on the Wildcats Saturday with a start time of 1 p.m. (junior varsity).
The Musketeers’ JV team also was able to get a victory Tuesday night as they went on to rout the Vikings 43-21.
