SPENCERVILLE — The Spencerville Bearcats played host to the Fort Jennings Musketeers Saturday night in their non-conference boys basketball game at Spencerville High School.
Trevor Von Sossan (25 points) and Jared Horstman (22; 9 boards, 5 assists) of the Musketeers were ready to silence the home crowd and they did as they scored a combined 47 points on the evening as they steam rolled the Bearcats 66-48.
The first quarter was a mixture of runs by both squads: Fort Jennings went on a 9-1 run in the beginning of the first quarter but it was answered by a 13-3 run by the Bearcats that led into the early part of the second frame.
The Bearcats just didn’t have an answer for the inside-outside duo of the Musketeers.
The first half of this game was a back and forth battle between the Muskeeters and the Bearcats as Jennings lead 17-11 after one quarter of action. The Bearcats had a little bit of trouble scoring in the first quarter against the Musketeers’ man defense but overcame it in the second; they came within four by halftime, 29-25 in favor of the visitors.
Von Sossan led Jennings in scoring at the half as he had 12 points.
The Bearcats were led by Kevin Lenhart with 12 markers and Levi Krouskop added 12 (6 rebounds).
“We got a solid effort from our players tonight, especially our seniors; they played very well. We played two very good games on back-to-back nights and I’m impressed with our players for that success,” Coach Von Sossan said.
The Bearcats tied the game up quickly in the start of the third quarter but then the Musketeers went on a 22-5 run to bust the game wide up. Leading the run were Horstman (8 points) and Von Sossan (6) as the guests went into the final quarter with a 51-34 advantage.
It was another back and forth battle as the Bearcats tried to keep it close.
“We real had some sophomores step up and play well tonight; that’s what what we need to be successful,” added Von Sossan.
Eli Bowers had nine points off the bench for Spencerville.
Spencerville will take on the Allen East Mustangs next Friday, with a junior varsity tip slated for 6 p.m. Jennings visits Ottoville the same night.
In the JV contest, the Bearcats won 50-21. Leading the Bearcats was Josiah McNulty with 13 points.
