ELIDA — The Spencerville Bearcats took on the Elida Bulldogs at the Elida Fieldhouse in boys varsity basketball action Friday night. The young Spencerville team got down early and couldn’t rebound as Elida had this one all the way, 70-52.
Elida came out on fire in the first quarter. The Bulldog offense was fast and not afraid to to put it up from behind the arc, nailing two 3’s in the first quarter to help Elida take a 14-6 lead and forced Spencerville to call their first time out. The Bulldogs would move forward and take a 20-6 lead by the end of the period. Reggie McAdams(20 pts, 4 steals , 2 blocks) was on fire in the first putting up 11 of his 20 points in the first. Matt Thompson(19 pts, 2 steals, 5/9 from behind the arc) also had a strong showing in the first, getting the first of his five 3 pointers in the first period.
The Bearcats were able to get some offense going in the second quarter. Trevor Hardeman(13 pts, 7 rebounds) and Levi Krouskop(10 pts, 10 rebounds) were able to collect some boards in the second to help generate points and slow the Bulldog offensive machine. Thompson and McAdams were still able to launch three from behind the arc and outscore the Bearcats 17-13 and went into halftime leading 37-19.
With an 18 point lead, Elida coach Denny Thompson had his concerns going into the third, “The third quarter has been our worse quarter, we wanted to come out and establish ourselves in the third quarter.” That is exactly what they did with help on the boards by Alex McAdams(11pts, 12 rebounds). Matt Thompson and Aric Thompson added three’s to the mix as the Bulldogs outscored the Spencerville 23-14 in the period to take a commanding 60-33 lead into the fourth.
Up by 27, Coach Thompson saw a good opportunity to get his young guys some game experience. pencerville was able to take advantage and put up points late in the fourth off a solid shooting performance by Eli Bowers(12 pts, 4/7 from the arch), who sank two in the fourth from behind the arc. The Bearcats outscored the Bulldogs 19-10 in the fourth but it wasn’t enough as the Bearcats fell to Elida 70-52.
Coach Thompson was pleased with his teams performance, especially their third quarter improvements.
“The most pleased thing I was with our game was that at halftime we have a tendency to come out in the third quarter, the third has been our worse quarter, we established ourselves in the third, I saw a lot of things, but that stands out because we talked about it,” he said.
The Bearcats went 18/46 from the field for 39 percent and 10/14 from the line for 71 percent. They picked up 28 boards and three steals on the night. The Bulldogs fared a little better with 26/55 from the field for 47 percent and 10/14 from the line for 71 percent. The home team picked up 34 boards, 9 steals and 2 blocks.
