CONVOY — The Jefferson girls basketball team traveled to Convoy Thursday night to take on the reigning Northwest Conference champions, the Crestview Lady Knights, at The Castle to begin the conference campaign for 2009-10.
After suffering two out of their three losses to Crestview last year, the unbeaten Wildcats were able to get some redemption back on their rivals and took Thursday’s game by a score of 42-30.
Both teams came out in the first quarter of play very slowly but the Jeffcats were able to get the lead early, only leading 4-3 at the end of one quarter but the momentum on their side.
In the second quarter both teams started to pick up the pace but the Jeffcats still held the lead, leading 16-11 after two quarters of play heading into halftime.
Veteran Jefferson coach Dave Hoffman thought his team was lacking defense in the first half of play and credits some of that to the Knights.
“Crestview is a solid team and we didn’t play that well in the first half but we were able to pick our ‘D’ up in the second half and hit some big shots to come away with it,” he commented.
Leading the way for the Jeffcats overall was junior sensation Kristin Klausing, who netted 17 points on the night. Senior Mallorie Wilson added eight points while junior Morgan Fischbach tallied seven on the night.
The second half of action belonged to the visitors. The Wildcats outscored the Knights 26-19 in the second half to pull away and make an early statement on the league race.
Leading the way for the Knights (2-2, 0-1 NWC) was senior guard Jo Thompson with 10 points on the night. Despite her efforts, the Knights were unable to stop Jefferson’s inside and outside presence the whole night.
“Tonight was a big win for us. It’s nice getting this win, especially after last year losing twice in a season to them and getting some sort of revenge back,” Hoffman added.
Jefferson reserves (3-1, 1-0) dominated in their contest, rolling up a 27-10 triumph.
With  the  win,  the Wildcats move to 4-0 (1-0 NWC) on the year and will travel to Kalida Saturday to take on the LadyCats with a JV start time of 1 p.m. (Varsity to follow).
