SPENCERVILLE — The Spencerville boys basketball team battled Minster most of the way at the Walk-In Closet of Spencerville High School but the visiting Wildcats rallied with a 25-13 fourth quarter to down the youthful Bearcats 65-54.
Up 41-40 to start the fourth, the Bearcats’ youth and inexperience showed up the most. Poor shot selection and foul trouble played a big part in the loss for the Bearcats. Minster took advantage of that and outscored the Bearcats 25-13 in the last quarter. The Wildcats’ Ross Heitkamp had 35 points on the night, a lot of those coming in the last quarter on free throws. He had six 3-pointers, four of them in the first half alone.
Spencerville head coach Kevin Sensabaugh knows his team has potential but they are young and inexperienced.
“Tonight, we took a step in the right direction but we still have a ways to go. I like the kids that I have to work with right now and they will eventually get it together but they are still young,” he commented.
Spencerville came out strong and hit some early shots but trailed 13-11 after one quarter of action.
Leading the way for the Bearcats was Trevor Hardeman with 17 points on the night and Brandon Ball nine.
Spencerville took the lead going into halftime and had the momentum on their side. With big shot after big shot from the home team, the Bearcats moved out to a 30-27 lead at halftime heading into the locker rooms. Spencerville created a lot of Minster miscues and took advantage of them. Minster tallied up 17 fouls on the night and Spencerville had 27.
In the third quarter, Minster was able to get back a couple of points. The Bearcats still were in the lead but by only one point — 41-40 — as the game headed into the final quarter of action.
Even though the Bearcats did not get the results that they may have wanted, Sensabaugh is optimistic about his team.
“We battled tonight with a good team and I saw a lot of things that I liked tonight. Now we just need to work on a couple of things and hopefully that can turn into some wins,” Sensabaugh added.
The Bearcats fall to 0-2 in the new season and will travel to Elida Friday night to take on the Bulldogs with a start time of 6:30 p.m. (JV).
