FORT JENNINGS — The Fort Jennings boys cage team led the whole way versus Ayersville, holding off a third-quarter surge and dispatching the Pilots 70-59 Saturday night at The Fort.
The Musketeers (1-1) came to play as they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Their press defense flustered the Pilots and produced five steals in the first quarter and the offense moved the ball well and efficiently kept the Ayersville defense on their heels. With leads in the quarter of 10-2 and 16-4, the Musketeers never relented and gained a 16-6 lead at the end of the first.
Ft. Jennings continued its domination into the second quarter, building leads of 26-8 and 30-12. Ayersville could not get much to fall, mostly due to the Musketeers’ stubborn defensive play. The Pilots struggled from the foul line as well, going 0/5 in the first half (2/18 for the night for 11%). The Musketeers capitalized on theirs, going 7/10 from the line (23/31 overall for 74%) and a 5-1 steal advantage that helped them take a 38-16 lead into the half.
A different Ayersville team came out in the third quarter. The Pilots were desperate to get something going and found their answer in a full-court press that generated four steals in the quarter and helped the visitors go on a 14-4 run that put Ayersville within eight. They continued to gain ground off a couple of big shots by senior Chez Weisner (12 points) to close within six of the home team. Despite the offensive surge, Ayersville continued to struggle from the line, which helped the Musketeers hold a 45-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Both teams were able to move the ball in the early part of the fourth. Jennings settled down towards the middle of the period and put together a 8-4 run, taking advantage of the Pilots being forced Ayersville to foul and heading to the line. The hosts went 16/19 from the line in the second half while Ayersville went 2/12, 0/14 before making their first free throw.
Ft. Jennings coach John Von Sossan wasn’t happy his team let up.
“They came out in the third and played twice as hard as they did in the first half and we started playing by ourselves. That was the basis of all my timeouts,” he explained. “We just got out of our game. This early in the season, I am just happy to come out on top; a win’s a win.”
Ft. Jennings went 21/44 from the field (47.7%) and had three players in double digits: senior Trevor Von Sossan (22; 5 assists), sophomore Jeremy Kohli (15 points) and sophomore Nolan Neidert (10, 3 3-pointers). They outrebounded Ayersville (0-2) 33-23 with sophomore Cody Warnecke grabbing 12. They host Antwerp 6 p.m. Friday.
Ayersville finished with 27/67 from the field (40%) but had three other players record double digits: Dallas Smith (12; 9 boards), Dillon Flint (11 points) and Sam Ewers (10).
