RURAL MIDDLE POINT — The Hicksville Lady Aces travelled to Lincolnview High School to take on the Lancers in girls basketball action Tuesday night. Hicksville kept things close in the early going but the young Lancer squad proved to be too much as Lincolnview trumped the Aces 50-36.
Lincolnview showed that they came to play, jumping out to an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter. Hicksville was able to close the gap to 9-4 by the end of the first.
After a slow start, Hicksville got back in the game, knotting things up 9-9 with 6 minutes left in the second. The Lady Lancers (1-1) were able to stifle the comeback by going on a 12-4 run to end the half up 21-13.
Despite shooting 26 percent from the field in the first half, Hicksville took advantage of Lincolnview’s aggressive play by going 5-of-9 from the free-throw line.
The third quarter was dominated by the Lady Lancers. After a 3-pointer by Lincolnview junior Shelby Osbourne put the Lady Lancers up 27-17, the momentum of the game permanently shifted to the home team. Three steals by Osbourne and two steals by Calista Dowdy helped the Lady Lancers to a 10-0 run and a 37-17 lead. Freshman Katie Dye (7 steals) added a couple of steals to the Lancers’ defensive effort and Lincolnview ended the third quarter with a 42-21 lead.
Hicksville (1-2) was able to enjoy continued success at the free-throw line, which helped them cut the Lancer lead to 15, but Lincolnview held on to win by the score of 50-36.
The Lady Aces were productive from the line; 15 of their 36 points came from the foul line.
Overall, Hicksville was 10-of-38 (26.3% percent) from the field and 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the foul line. Senior Kacee Babinger lead the way for the Lady Aces going 2-of-4 from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line for a total of 12 points on the night.
The young (no seniors on the roster) Lady Lancers were able to stay consistent throughout.
Lincolnview shot 19-of-46 (41.3%) from the field and 11-of-20 (55%) from the foul line. Leading the Lancer charge was junior Shelby Osbourne with 18 points (6-of-19 from the field, 1-of-2 3-pointers, 3-of-5 from the foul line), Dye with 10 points (5/7 from the field), Kaitlyn Brant with seven points (2/5 from the field, 3/4 from the foul line) and Abbi Alvarez with six (1/5 from the field, 4/6 from the foul line).
Lincolnview outboarded Hicksville 30-26 (Dowdy with
and forced 18 turnovers (14 of its own).
Lancer coach Dave Evans was happy with his team’s performance, especially in the third period.
“Overall, I think we had a pretty good effort out there,” Evans said. “We came out in the third quarter and played aggressively on defense, which led to many good looks at the basket. We only committed two turnovers ourselves in the third quarter while forcing 10. For the most part, we were in a man-to-man full-court defense; we anticipated the ball well and shut down the passing lanes and we got a lot of easy shots by moving the basketball, getting steals and making layups. Even in our half-court offense, we were able to move the ball well against the zone and get some good looks; when we move the basketball and take care of it, good things are going to happen.”
In the JV game, Hicksville defeated Lincolnview 32-30.
“This was a good win for this young group. We just need to continue to work hard and get better each night out,” Evans added.
Lincolnview visits Ottoville for a 1 p.m. (JV start) battle Saturday.
