Ottoville dominates in Tip-Off Classic
For The Delphos Herald
VAN WERT – Ottoville wrapped up the McDonald’s Tip-Off Classic Championship in style on Saturday night as the Big Green dominated Wayne Trace 64-27 at Van Wert High School.
The Lady Big Green held the Raiders to single digits in each of the four quarters in cruising to victory number two on the season.
“I thought our defense was very good and solid tonight,” noted Ottoville head coach Dave Kleman. “Our defensive pressure took them out of what they wanted to do offensively and then it got them out of their comfort zone.”
Ottoville used an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter and finished the stanza with consecutive baskets to take a 14-6 lead after eight minutes of action.
The Raiders trimmed the deficit to 14-9 early in the second quarter on a Jo Ellen Fickel 3-point play but would get no closer. Ottoville answered with nine straight points, three by Chelsea Ditto and two each from Abby Siefker, Tasha Kauffman and Kari Beining, to take a commanding 23-9 advantage.
“We just never got into any type of rhythm at all tonight,” stated Raider head coach Greg Davis. “Ottoville really came out and took it to us in every facet of the basketball game. They came out ready to play and we didn’t.”
After a basket by Wayne Trace’s Andrea Padilla, a trey by Lauren Kramer and two Siefker free throws pushed the Big Green lead to 30-13. Ottoville went on to post a 33-15 lead at the intermission.
“We shot the ball very well tonight,” continued Kleman. “That is an area that we think can be strength for us all season long and if we are able to do that, it makes us very dangerous offensively.”
The third quarter was much of the same.
The Big Green opened the stanza with a 15-0 run before two Kacee Hockenberry free throws finally got Wayne Trace on the board. By then though, Ottoville led 48-17 and finished the period on a 10-2 run in holding a commanding 58-19 advantage entering the final quarter.
“My biggest thing is these girls have to come ready to play and we didn’t do that tonight,” concluded Davis.
Hockenberry paced the red, white and blue with a dozen markers with Sarah Feasby adding eight. Feasby also led the Raiders on the boards with eight.
Kauffman led the Big Green with 20 points with Beining adding 13 markers. Siefker chipped in eight points but also led Ottoville with 14 rebounds. Lauren Koch, Kramer and Ditto (3 assists) added seven, six and six points, respectively. Ditto also had six steals for Ottoville.
The Big Green (2-0) finished the night 26-of-51 from the field for 51 percent compared to Wayne Trace’s 11-of-39 for 28 percent. Ottoville won the battle of the boards 32-24 and also committed only nine turnovers to Wayne Trace’s 27.
Wayne Trace (1-1) will return to action on Tuesday as the Raiders visit Parkway in a non-league battle. Ottoville takes a week off before the Big Green travels to Lincolnview on Saturday.
In the consolation game, Crestview evened its record at 1-1 with a 49-31 win over Van Wert.
The Lady Knights led 12-9 after one quarter and posted a 24-19 advantage at the intermission. Crestview, though, broke the game open in the third period by outscoring the Cougars 15-6 in taking a 39-25 advantage.
Jo Thompson led the Knights with 17 points with Jessica Burger adding 11. Danica Hicks chipped in seven for Crestview while MacKenzie Richard and Madison Preston bucketed six each.
Nikki Morrow paced Van Wert (0-2) with eight markers with Nikki Young and Molly Gamble adding six each. Samantha Fiegel also had five for the Cougars.
Van Wert returns to action on Thursday as the Lady Cougars visit Jefferson. Crestview doesn’t return to to action until Dec. 8 as the Lady Knights host Parkway.
